Description

The M5Stack Mini ToF Unit integrates the STMicroelectronics VL53L0X sensor, a state-of-the-art Time-of-Flight (ToF) laser ranging module. It uses a 940 nm VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser) as a light source and measures the time for reflected photons to return to a single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) array. This direct ToF principle enables precise, ambient-light-immune distance measurements.

The sensor module is uniquely rotated 90° from its standard orientation, positioning its 25° horizontal Field of View forward. This configuration is ideal for obstacle detection and spatial mapping in mobile robotics and automated systems. The module includes an onboard microcontroller for signal processing and provides a clean digital I2C output, simplifying integration into 3.3V or 5V logic systems like Arduino, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi.

Key Features

  • Precision ToF Laser Ranging: Utilizes the VL53L0X sensor for direct time-of-flight measurement with high immunity to ambient light and target color.
  • Optimized Horizontal Sensing: 90° rotated module orientation provides a forward-facing 25° horizontal Field of View for robotics and navigation.
  • Fast and Accurate Performance: Delivers measurements with ±3% accuracy, 1 mm resolution, and a sub-30ms response time for dynamic applications.
  • Standardized Grove Connectivity: Features a 4-pin Grove (HY2.0-4P) connector for reliable I2C communication and easy daisy-chaining in modular systems.
  • Compact and Lightweight Build: Ultra-small 24 x 24 mm form factor and 1.7g weight enable integration into drones, wearable tech, and compact devices.
  • Broad Compatibility: Designed for M5Stack ecosystem, Arduino IDE, and UiFlow block programming, with libraries available for major development platforms.

Applications

  • Robotics Obstacle Avoidance & Navigation: Front-facing proximity detection for autonomous mobile robots and drones.
  • Smart Home & Security Monitoring: People detection, occupancy sensing, and intrusion alert systems.
  • Intelligent Transportation: Object distance monitoring for automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and smart carts.
  • Interactive Installations & Gesture Control: Precise hand-tracking and presence detection for interactive displays.
  • Inventory & Level Sensing: Non-contact measurement of object height or bin level in compact spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the default I2C address of the M5Stack Mini ToF Unit, and can it be changed?

The default I2C address is 0x52. Yes, the VL53L0X sensor's address can be reprogrammed via software to avoid conflicts in systems with multiple I2C devices. Standard Arduino and M5Stack libraries provide functions for this purpose.

What is the operating voltage range, and how do I power this sensor?

The module is designed to operate from a 3.3V or 5V supply provided through the Grove connector's VCC pin. The I2C logic levels are compatible with both 3.3V and 5V microcontrollers. Simply connect the included Grove cable to a compatible Grove base shield or adapter.

How does the 90-degree orientation affect the sensor's field of view and typical use?

The module is rotated 90°, positioning its inherent vertical FOV into a horizontal plane. This creates a 25° horizontal forward Field of View, making it ideal for forward-facing applications like robot front obstacle detection, shelf monitoring, or people counting, where sensing parallel to the ground is required.

What is the minimum measurable distance, and can it detect objects closer than 3 cm?

The specified minimum distance is 3 cm. The VL53L0X sensor has a blind zone, and objects closer than this may not be detected accurately or may return an out-of-range error. For very close-range detection, consider a different sensor type like an ultrasonic or infrared proximity sensor.
