Description

This cylindrical inductive proximity sensor operates on the eddy current principle. When a ferrous metal target enters its 6.4mm sensing field, it induces eddy currents that dampen the sensor’s internal oscillator, triggering a solid-state output switch. The normally-closed (NC) configuration provides a closed circuit when no target is present, opening upon detection.

Built with a durable brass-nickel plated case and an ABS sensing face, the sensor is rated IP65 for reliable performance in environments with dust and water spray. It features integrated protection against reverse polarity and output short circuits, allowing for direct connection to programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and other industrial control systems without additional circuitry.

Key Features

  • Normally Closed (NC) Output: Provides a closed signal loop in the idle state, opening upon target detection for fail-safe control applications.
  • Wide Voltage Compatibility: Operates from 6 to 36V DC, accommodating a broad range of industrial power supplies and controllers.
  • Robust Industrial Housing: Brass-nickel plated cylindrical body with IP65 sealing ensures durability against dust, oil, and water jets.
  • Integrated Circuit Protection: Built-in safeguards against reverse polarity connection and output short-circuit conditions.
  • High-Speed Switching: Capable of high-frequency operation for fast-moving machinery and precise position feedback.
  • Status Indication: Integrated red LED provides visual confirmation of the sensor's switching state for easy diagnostics.
  • Non-Shielded (Flush-Mountable) Design: Allows for side-by-side installation without mutual interference.

Applications

  • Position verification and end-of-travel sensing on CNC machines and automated lathes.
  • Metal part detection and counting on conveyor lines and assembly automation.
  • Replacement for mechanical limit switches in robotic arms and material handling equipment.
  • Safety interlock and door position monitoring on industrial cabinets and machinery guards.
  • Tool presence and breakage detection in machining centers and tool changers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Normally Open (NO) and Normally Closed (NC) on this sensor?

This LJ18A3 model is Normally Closed (NC). In its idle state (no target present), the output transistor is ON, providing a closed circuit to the load. When a metal target enters the 6.4mm sensing range, the output switches OFF, opening the circuit. This configuration is often used for fail-safe applications where an open circuit indicates a fault or detection event.

What power supply voltage can I use with this sensor?

The sensor operates on a wide DC voltage range of 6 to 36V. It includes reverse polarity protection, but you must ensure the power supply can deliver the required current (up to 300mA max) and is stable. It is compatible with common 12V or 24V industrial DC power systems and PLC input modules.

Can this sensor detect non-ferrous metals like aluminum or copper?

No. Standard inductive proximity sensors like the LJ18A3 series are specifically tuned to detect ferrous metals (iron and steel). The sensing distance is reduced or may be non-existent for non-ferrous metals. For aluminum or copper detection, a capacitive or specialized non-ferrous inductive sensor is required.

How do I wire this 3-wire DC inductive sensor?

The sensor has three wires: Brown (V+), Blue (V- / Ground), and Black (Signal Output). Connect Brown to your DC positive supply (6-36V), Blue to DC negative/ground. The Black wire is the switched NPN output. Connect it to your PLC input or load, which must be connected back to the positive supply (sourcing input) for the NC switching action to function correctly.

What does 'non-shielded' or 'flush mountable' mean for installation?

A non-shielded sensor allows the magnetic field to extend to the sides of the barrel. This means it can be installed flush with a metal mounting surface without a loss of sensing range. However, non-shielded sensors require more clearance from adjacent metal objects (typically 2x the sensor diameter) to prevent false triggering.
