Description

The Barometric Pressure Unit leverages the Bosch BMP280 MEMS sensor, a highly stable and precise digital barometer. It measures absolute atmospheric pressure from 300 to 1100 hPa, corresponding to an altitude range of approximately -500 to +9000 meters, with a pressure resolution of 0.16 Pa. The integrated temperature sensor provides simultaneous ambient temperature readings with a resolution of 0.01°C, enabling accurate altitude estimation and environmental monitoring.

Designed for embedded systems and IoT nodes, the module features a Grove digital connector for simplified wiring to microcontrollers like the M5Stack Core, ESP32, and Arduino boards. Its compact 24×24 mm form factor includes LEGO-compatible mounting holes for secure mechanical integration into wearable devices, drones, and weather stations. The sensor supports configurable oversampling and a built-in 5-segment digital filter for noise reduction in dynamic environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the communication interface for this pressure sensor module?

The module uses the I2C communication protocol, accessible via its included Grove connector. This standard 4-pin interface simplifies wiring to compatible development boards like the M5Stack Core, ESP32, and Arduino Uno with a Grove shield. The sensor's I2C address is configurable.

How accurate is the altitude estimation provided by this unit?

The unit's high relative pressure accuracy of ±0.12 hPa translates to an altitude estimation resolution of approximately ±1 meter under stable atmospheric conditions. Accuracy for absolute altitude depends on a known reference SEA-level pressure, but the sensor is excellent for tracking relative height changes in applications like drones or wearables.

Can this sensor be used in battery-powered or low-power projects?

Yes, the Bosch BMP280 sensor is designed for ultra-low power consumption. In normal mode at a 1 Hz sampling rate, it draws only 2.7 µA. It also supports sleep and forced measurement modes, allowing the host microcontroller to wake the sensor, take a reading, and return it to sleep, maximizing battery life in portable applications.

What is the purpose of the integrated temperature sensor?

The on-chip temperature sensor is essential for compensating the pressure readings, as the BMP280's pressure measurement is temperature-sensitive. This internal compensation ensures high accuracy and low drift (1.5 Pa/K) across the full -40°C to +85°C operating range. The temperature data is also available for logging or environmental monitoring.
