Description

The DT1-028K from TE Connectivity is a fundamental piezoelectric film sensor element from the DT series. It consists of a rectangular piezo polymer film with screen-printed silver ink electrodes, providing a high voltage output proportional to applied dynamic strain or vibration. Its core principle leverages the direct piezoelectric effect to convert mechanical stress into an electrical charge, making it exceptionally sensitive to transient events.

This sensor is supplied without attached leads, offering maximum flexibility for integration. It can be permanently mounted to surfaces using double-sided tape or epoxy. The high output impedance necessitates connection to a buffer amplifier or data acquisition system with an input impedance of at least 1 MΩ (10 MΩ recommended) to prevent signal attenuation. With a nominal capacitance of 1.38 nF, it is suitable for a wide range of impact, vibration, and acoustic emission monitoring tasks in both prototyping and industrial environments.

Key Features

  • High piezo activity polymer film for superior sensitivity to dynamic strain and vibration.
  • Flexible construction with silver ink metallization for durable electrical contacts.
  • Leadless configuration enables custom wiring solutions for specific application needs.
  • Simple installation via adhesive bonding (tape or epoxy) to various surfaces.
  • Optimized performance-to-cost ratio for high-volume sensing applications.
  • Robust operating range from -40°C to +60°C ensures reliability in diverse environments.

Applications

  • Industrial machinery condition monitoring for vibration analysis and impact detection.
  • Acoustic emission sensing for structural health monitoring and crack detection.
  • Custom contact microphone design for musical instruments or sound effect triggers.
  • Impact and event counting systems in manufacturing or packaging lines.
  • Prototyping of tactile and force-sensing interfaces in human-machine interaction.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I connect wires to this leadless DT1-028K sensor?

The sensor requires a custom lead attachment. Reliable connections can be made using compressive clamping with a metal plate, crimping with eyelets, or applying conductive epoxy. Low-temperature soldering (< 150°C) is also possible with extreme care to avoid damaging the polymer film and silver electrodes.

What input impedance does my amplifier or DAQ system need for this sensor?

The DT1-028K has a very high output impedance. To accurately measure the generated voltage signal without significant attenuation, your signal conditioning circuit or data acquisition input must have an impedance of at least 1 Megohm (1 MΩ), with 10 Megohms (10 MΩ) being the recommended value for optimal performance.

What is the best method to mount this piezoelectric film sensor?

For permanent installation, use a thin layer of epoxy or high-performance double-sided adhesive tape to bond the entire sensor surface to your target. Ensure the mounting surface is clean and flat. The sensor is flexible and can conform to slightly curved surfaces, but rigid mounting provides the best mechanical coupling for vibration transfer.

Can this sensor measure static force or pressure?

No. Piezoelectric sensors like the DT1-028K are inherently dynamic devices. They generate a charge only when the applied strain is changing. They are excellent for measuring vibration, impact, and transient events but cannot provide a stable output for static or slowly varying forces due to charge leakage.
