Out of Stock

The MQ-9 is a semiconductor gas sensor module designed for detecting Carbon Monoxide (CO), Methane (CH4), Propane, and other combustible gases. It operates on a 5V DC supply and provides both analog (AO) and digital (DO) TTL output signals, making it compatible with microcontrollers like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and ESP32 for air quality monitoring and safety applications.

Features

  • Semiconductor sensor with SnO2 sensing element for CO and combustible gases.
  • Dual-temperature cycle operation: low temp (1.5V heat) for CO, high temp (5.0V heat) for Methane/Propane.
  • Provides both analog voltage (AO) and digital TTL (DO) output signals for flexible interfacing.
  • Simple 5V DC drive circuit with a current consumption of approximately 150mA.
  • Compact PCB module format for easy integration into detectors and monitoring systems.

Description

The MQ-9 gas sensor module utilizes a tin dioxide (SnO2) semiconductor sensing element whose conductivity changes in the presence of target gases. It employs a dual-temperature heating cycle to differentiate gas types: a lower temperature phase (heated by 1.5V) optimizes sensitivity to Carbon Monoxide, while a higher temperature phase (heated by 5.0V) detects Methane, Propane, and other combustible gases while cleaning the sensor surface.

The module includes onboard signal conditioning to provide a stable analog output voltage (AO) proportional to gas concentration, as well as a digital output (DO) that switches from a TTL high to low state when a preset threshold is exceeded. This design allows for direct connection to ADC inputs or digital pins on most development boards and industrial controllers.

Key Features

  • Semiconductor SnO2 sensor with good sensitivity to CO, Methane (CH4), and LPG gases like Propane.
  • Intelligent dual-temperature heating cycle for targeted gas detection and sensor maintenance.
  • Dual output interface: Analog voltage (AO) for concentration measurement and digital TTL (DO) for threshold alarming.
  • Simple 5V DC power requirement, compatible with standard microcontroller and logic power rails.
  • Compact and lightweight PCB module design for easy prototyping and integration.
  • Long-life sensor element with a stable performance profile.
  • High-value build optimized for cost-effective gas detection solutions.

Applications

  • Domestic gas leak detectors for natural gas (methane) or LPG systems.
  • Industrial safety monitors for Carbon Monoxide in workshops, garages, or boiler rooms.
  • Portable air quality and combustible gas detectors for field service personnel.
  • Embedded safety systems in smart home appliances or HVAC equipment.
  • Prototyping and educational projects for environmental sensing with Arduino or Raspberry Pi.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage for the MQ-9 sensor module?

The MQ-9 module requires a stable 5V DC power supply (±0.2V). It draws approximately 150mA of current to power both the sensor heater and the onboard circuitry. Ensure your power source can provide this current to maintain proper sensor operation and heating cycles.

What is the difference between the AO and DO pins on the module?

The AO (Analog Output) pin provides a variable voltage signal (typically 0.1V to 0.3V in clean air) that increases proportionally with the concentration of the target gas. The DO (Digital Output) pin provides a TTL-level signal; it outputs a logic HIGH (5V) normally and switches to LOW (0.1V) when the gas concentration exceeds a preset threshold, which can be adjusted via the onboard potentiometer.

Which gases can the MQ-9 sensor detect?

The MQ-9 is primarily sensitive to Carbon Monoxide (CO), Methane (CH4), and Propane (a component of LPG). Its dual-temperature heating cycle helps differentiate between gases: lower temperature heating favors CO detection, while higher temperature heating is optimal for Methane, Propane, and other combustible hydrocarbons.

How do I interface the MQ-9 module with an Arduino or Raspberry Pi?

Connect VCC to 5V and GND to ground on your controller. For concentration reading, connect the AO pin to an analog input (ADC) pin. For a simple alarm trigger, connect the DO pin to a digital input pin. The module's outputs are compatible with 5V and 3.3V logic levels, making it suitable for most development boards.

Does the sensor require any calibration or pre-heating time?

Yes, the MQ-9 sensor requires an initial pre-heating period of at least 24-48 hours of continuous operation for the readings to stabilize. For accurate quantitative measurement, calibration against known gas concentrations in a controlled environment is recommended. The sensor is best used for qualitative detection or trend monitoring without precise calibration.
