Description

This Gravity-series module is built around the ITR9608, a high-performance slotted optical switch consisting of an infrared LED and a phototransistor aligned across a 5mm gap. When an object passes through this slot, it interrupts the infrared beam, causing the phototransistor’s state to change. This transition is conditioned by an onboard comparator to produce a stable, debounced digital signal.

The module is designed for seamless integration with popular development platforms via its standardized Gravity 3-pin connector (PH2.0-3P), which carries VCC, GND, and the digital output signal. Its operating voltage range of 3.3V to 5V DC makes it versatile for use with a wide array of microcontrollers and single-board computers, ensuring reliable performance in both hobbyist projects and industrial prototyping environments.

Key Features

  • High-reliability ITR9608 infrared photo interrupter ensures consistent object detection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for this photo interrupter module?

The module operates from 3.3V to 5V DC. You can power it directly from the 3.3V or 5V pin of most development boards like Arduino, ESP32, or Raspberry Pi. The digital output signal is compatible with both 3.3V and 5V logic levels.

How do I connect and read the signal from this module?

Connect the module using the included Gravity 3-pin cable: Red to VCC, Black to GND, and Blue (or signal wire) to a digital input pin on your microcontroller. The output is a clean digital signal; it goes LOW when an object interrupts the infrared beam in the 5mm slot and HIGH when the beam is clear.

What is the detection gap size, and what objects can it sense?

The module features a 5.0mm wide photonic gap. It can detect any opaque object thin enough to fit into this slot, such as paper, plastic tabs, metal blades, or encoder wheels. The object must be sufficiently opaque to the 940nm infrared light to reliably trigger the sensor.

Is this module suitable for high-speed counting applications?

Yes, the ITR9608 photoelectric switch and onboard conditioning circuitry are designed for responsive detection. It is suitable for applications like counting items on a conveyor belt or measuring rotational speed, where the digital pulses can be counted or timed by a microcontroller's interrupt or input capture pin.

Can I use this sensor with a Raspberry Pi or ESP32?

Absolutely. The module's 3.3V operation and logic-compatible digital output make it directly usable with 3.3V boards like Raspberry Pi GPIO or ESP32. For the Raspberry Pi, ensure you use a logic-level safe connection, though the module's output is already within the safe 3.3V range.
