Description

The METHANE Click utilizes a tin dioxide (SnO₂) semiconductor sensing element. In clean air, the sensor’s conductivity is low. When methane gas is present, the conductivity increases proportionally, generating a corresponding analog voltage signal. This board is designed for system-level integration, requiring a 24-hour preheat period after initial power-up for optimal sensor stability and accurate calibration.

The included potentiometer allows for environmental calibration by adjusting the sensor’s load resistance, tailoring the sensitivity to specific application conditions. The board’s design adheres to the mikroBUS standard, ensuring mechanical and electrical compatibility with hundreds of host boards from Mikroe and other manufacturers, simplifying prototyping and development.

Key Features

  • MQ-4 Methane Sensor: Reliable semiconductor sensor specifically tuned for methane (CH₄) detection.
  • Analog Output Interface: Provides a straightforward voltage signal proportional to gas concentration for direct ADC reading.
  • Onboard Calibration Potentiometer: Enables precise adjustment of the sensor's load resistance for environmental calibration.
  • mikroBUS Click Standard: Guarantees plug-and-play compatibility with a vast ecosystem of development boards.
  • Dual Voltage Operation: Supports both 3.3V and 5V microcontroller systems for versatile integration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the output signal of the METHANE Click board?

The board provides an analog voltage output via the mikroBUS AN (OUT) pin. The output voltage varies proportionally with the concentration of methane gas detected by the onboard MQ-4 sensor, allowing it to be read directly by a microcontroller's ADC input.

How do I calibrate the sensor for my environment?

Calibration is performed using the onboard potentiometer to adjust the sensor circuit's load resistance. For precise calibration, the sensor requires a preheat period of approximately 24 hours after first being powered on to reach its optimal operating temperature and stable baseline.

What power supply does this Click board require?

The METHANE Click is designed to operate with a 5V power supply provided through the mikroBUS socket. It is also compatible with 3.3V logic levels on the communication lines, making it suitable for use with both 5V and 3.3V microcontroller hosts.

Is this sensor specific to methane, or does it detect other gases?

The MQ-4 sensor is primarily sensitive to methane (CH₄) and natural gas. While it may show some cross-sensitivity to other combustible gases, its sensing layer (SnO₂) is specifically optimized for the highest sensitivity and selectivity towards methane within its specified 200-10,000 ppm range.
