Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the BMP280 and BME280 sensors?

The BMP280 measures barometric pressure and temperature only. The BME280 includes an additional integrated humidity sensor. Both share similar pressure and temperature sensing cores and digital interfaces (I2C/SPI), but the BME280 is used for more comprehensive environmental monitoring.

How do I select between I2C and SPI communication on this module?

The communication protocol is selected via a resistor (R1) on the breakout board. The default configuration uses I2C. To use SPI, you must desolder the 0-ohm resistor R1. The module's pinout and Bosch datasheet provide the specific pin mappings for both 3-wire and 4-wire SPI modes.

Can I power this module directly from a 5V Arduino pin?

No, you must not apply 5V directly to the VDD pin. The BMP280 chip's absolute maximum supply voltage (VDD) is 3.6V. You can power the module from a 3.3V regulator. If your microcontroller uses 5V logic, ensure the I2C lines are level-shifted to 3.3V, or use the module's separate VDDIO pin if available.

How accurate is the altitude measurement derived from pressure?

The altitude reading is calculated from the measured barometric pressure using the international barometric formula. Its accuracy relative to true altitude depends on the local SEA-level pressure reference. Under stable atmospheric conditions and with a correct reference pressure, the sensor can achieve resolution of approximately ±1 meter.
