Description

The OV5647 5MP IR-Cut Camera is a dedicated CSI-interface module designed for Raspberry Pi single-board computers. It features a 1/4-inch OV5647 CMOS sensor capable of capturing 5-megapixel stills (2592×1944) and streaming 1080p video at 30 frames per second. The integrated IR-Cut filter mechanically switches to block infrared light during daytime operation, preventing color distortion and producing true-to-life images.

For low-light or nighttime monitoring, the module includes manual control circuitry. An onboard adjustable resistor lets you set an ambient light threshold, enabling the manual switching of externally attached IR LEDs. Dedicated screw terminals provide 3.3V to 5V power output for these LEDs, facilitating night vision setups without requiring additional driver boards. The module operates on a 3.3V supply from the Raspberry Pi’s CSI connector and comes with a 14cm 15-pin FFC ribbon cable for flexible mounting.

Key Features

  • 5-Megapixel OV5647 CMOS sensor with 1/4-inch optical format for detailed image capture.
  • Mechanical IR-Cut filter ensures accurate color reproduction by blocking IR light during the day.
  • Manual day/night switching via an onboard adjustable resistor for external IR LED control.
  • Provides 3.3V-5V power output terminals for directly driving infrared LEDs for night vision.
  • Fixed-focus lens with F1.8 aperture and 3.6mm focal length for a 60-degree diagonal field of view.
  • Native Raspberry Pi CSI interface compatibility, supported by standard Raspbian OS drivers.
  • Compact form factor (32.12 x 30 x 25.5 mm) with mounting holes for secure installation.
  • Supports multiple video modes: 1080p @ 30fps, 720p @ 60fps, and 640x480 @ 60/90fps.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I enable night vision with this OV5647 camera module?

Night vision requires attaching external IR LEDs. Connect the LEDs to the module's screw terminal blocks, which provide 3.3V-5V power. Use the onboard adjustable resistor to set the ambient light threshold for manual switching. When ambient light falls below this level, you can manually activate the IR LEDs. The camera sensor itself is sensitive to infrared light, allowing it to capture illuminated scenes in complete darkness. Ensure you use compatible 850nm or 940nm IR LEDs matched to the output current.

Is this camera compatible with Raspberry Pi 5 and the latest Raspberry Pi OS?

This camera uses the legacy CSI interface and is primarily designed for Raspberry Pi models 1 through 4. For Raspberry Pi 5, you may require an adapter cable due to the changed connector. It is supported in the standard Raspberry Pi OS (formerly Raspbian) using the `libcamera` stack or the legacy `raspistill`/`raspivid` commands. Ensure your OS is updated. For Bullseye or later, you might need to enable the legacy camera stack in `raspi-config` under 'Interface Options' to use older command-line tools.

What is the purpose of the IR-Cut filter and how does it work?

The IR-Cut filter is a mechanical filter that blocks infrared light wavelengths during daytime operation. Infrared light can cause color distortion (e.g., greens appearing pink) in daylight images. The filter slides over the sensor to provide true color reproduction. For night vision, the filter is mechanically moved away, allowing IR light to reach the sensor, which is sensitive to it. This module uses a manual switching mechanism controlled via the adjustable resistor and external trigger, unlike fully automatic dual-filter cameras.

What software commands can I use to capture images and video?

On Raspberry Pi OS with the legacy camera stack enabled, use `raspistill -o image.webp` for stills and `raspivid -o video.h264` for video. For the newer `libcamera` stack, use `libcamera-still -o image.webp` and `libcamera-vid -o video.h264`. You can specify resolution, quality, and exposure settings via command-line arguments. For programming, Python libraries like `picamera2` (for `libcamera`) or `picamera` (for legacy stack) are available. Always verify the camera is detected using `vcgencmd get_camera` or `libcamera-hello` before coding.
