Winsen MQ-5 LPG Gas Sensor Module - Semiconductor CH4/C3H8 Detection
The Winsen MQ-5 is a semiconductor gas sensor module designed for detecting LPG, methane (CH4), and propane (C3H8) concentrations from 300 to 10,000 ppm. Operating on a 5V DC supply, it provides both analog and digital output signals, making it compatible with development platforms like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and industrial PLCs for gas leakage monitoring.
Features
- Semiconductor sensor with tin dioxide (SnO2) sensing element for LPG, methane, and propane detection.
- Wide detecting range from 300 to 10,000 ppm for target gases.
- Operates on 5.0V AC or DC heater voltage with simple drive circuit requirements.
- Provides analog output voltage signal (2.5V to 4.0V in 2000 ppm C3H8) for concentration measurement.
- Compact metal cap and bakelite encapsulation with dimensions of 24mm length and 19mm diameter.

The Winsen MQ-5 gas sensor utilizes a tin dioxide (SnO2) semiconductor sensing element. In clean air, the conductivity of the SnO2 layer is low. When exposed to combustible gases like methane, butane, or propane, the sensor’s conductivity increases proportionally with the gas concentration. This change in conductivity is converted into a corresponding analog output voltage signal via a simple external circuit, enabling precise concentration measurement.
The module is designed for reliable long-term operation in controlled environments, with specified performance calibrated at 20°C ±2°C and 55% ±5% relative humidity. Its robust bakelite and metal cap construction ensures durability for continuous monitoring applications in residential, commercial, and light industrial settings.
