The Seeed Studio Studio Grove Water Sensor v1.1 is a conductivity-based liquid detection module compatible with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and other Grove ecosystem devices. It provides both digital and analog output signals to indicate moisture presence, from dry to fully immersed states, for simple water level and leakage monitoring.

Features

  • Conductivity-based sensing via exposed PCB traces with 1 MΩ pull-up resistor.
  • Dual-mode output: digital trigger for presence/absence and analog for level indication.
  • Grove standardized 4-pin connector for plug-and-play compatibility with Seeed Studio Studio base shields.
  • Low operating current (<20mA) and wide 4.75V to 5.25V DC supply range.
  • Compact PCB footprint (40mm x 20mm) with 2mm mounting holes for secure installation.

Description

The Grove Water Sensor operates on the principle of electrical conductivity between its interlaced ground and sensor signal traces. A weak 1 MΩ pull-up resistor holds the sensor trace high. When water bridges the gap between traces, conductivity increases, pulling the signal trace low. This change can be read as a digital signal for simple detection or as an analog voltage for proportional water level estimation.

Designed for seamless integration, the module features the Grove 4-pin interface, simplifying connections to microcontrollers like Arduino and Raspberry Pi via corresponding base shields. Its operational envelope is suited for indoor or protected environments, with specified operating conditions of 10°C to 30°C and 10% to 90% relative humidity (non-condensing).

Key Features

  • Grove standardized interface for rapid prototyping and system integration.
  • High-sensitivity detection capable of responding to a single water droplet.
  • Optimized low-power design with current consumption under 20mA.
  • Durable FR4 PCB construction with exposed, corrosion-resistant conductive traces.
  • Provides both digital (on/off) and analog (gradient) output signals for flexible system design.
  • Compact form factor with integrated mounting holes for stable placement in enclosures or tanks.

Applications

  • Rainfall detection and simple weather station modules.
  • Liquid leakage or spill detection under appliances, in basements, or enclosures.
  • Tank overflow prevention and basic water level monitoring in small reservoirs.
  • Plant soil moisture sensing for automated gardening and irrigation systems.
  • Educational projects demonstrating conductivity-based sensing principles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the Grove Water Sensor?

The module requires a DC supply voltage between 4.75V and 5.25V. It is designed for standard 5V logic systems commonly used with Arduino and other microcontroller platforms. Exceeding this range may damage the sensor's internal circuitry.

How do I connect this sensor to an Arduino board?

Connect the module's 4-pin Grove connector to a Grove Base Shield attached to your Arduino. For digital detection, use a digital input pin. For analog level reading, connect to an analog input pin (e.g., A0). The sensor's SIG pin provides the output signal, VCC and GND provide power.

Can this sensor measure water level accurately in a tank?

It provides a relative analog signal that changes with the amount of water bridging its traces, offering a basic indication of level or wetness. For precise volumetric measurement, a dedicated pressure or ultrasonic level sensor is recommended. This sensor is best for presence/absence detection or overflow warning.

Is the sensor suitable for outdoor or harsh environments?

No. Its operating range is limited to 10-30°C and non-condensing humidity up to 90%. The exposed PCB traces are not protected against continuous immersion, corrosion, or contamination. For outdoor or industrial use, a sealed, IP-rated probe with protected electrodes is required.
