This RM12 model is a shielded (flush-mount) sensor. Its internal coil is surrounded by a metal shield that confines the magnetic field primarily to the front face. This allows it to be installed flush with or embedded into a metal mounting bracket without the bracket itself triggering a false detection. Unshielded sensors have a larger, radial sensing field and require a non-metallic clearance around the sides.

Connect the Red wire to your positive DC supply voltage (6-36V), the Blue wire to the DC common (0V/GND), and the Black wire (signal output) to your PLC's digital input. For a typical PLC with a sinking input (connected to 0V internally), the Black wire will source current to the input when a metal target is detected, closing the circuit. Always ensure polarity is correct to activate the built-in reverse protection.

Inductive sensors primarily detect ferrous metals (like iron and steel) with the highest sensitivity. They can also detect non-ferrous metals (aluminum, copper) but at a reduced effective distance, typically 30-60% of the nominal 2mm rating. The actual reliable operating point (setting distance) should be ≤ 1.4mm (70% of nominal) to account for temperature drift and supply voltage variations.
