Description

The Nova Sensor SDS011 particulate matter sensor employs a laser scattering detection principle to accurately measure airborne Particle concentrations within a diameter range of 0.3 to 10 micrometers. The sensor’s internal fan draws a consistent air sample across the laser path, where scattered light is analyzed to calculate mass concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10.

It outputs processed digital data directly via a serial UART interface at 9600 baud, eliminating the need for external analog signal conditioning. The sensor is engineered for stable operation across an industrial temperature range of -20°C to 55°C, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor environmental monitoring systems, including HVAC control, smart purifiers, and data-logging stations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the output interface of the SDS011 sensor and how do I connect it to an Arduino?

The SDS011 provides two primary digital output options: a UART serial interface (TX/RX pins) operating at 9600 baud and two configurable PWM output pins. For Arduino connection, simply connect the sensor's 5V and GND to the Arduino's 5V and GND, then connect the sensor's TX pin to an Arduino RX pin (e.g., Digital Pin 2 using SoftwareSerial) to read the serial data stream containing PM2.5 and PM10 values.

What is the power requirement and can the sensor be powered continuously?

The sensor requires a stable 5V DC power supply and draws a maximum working current of 100mA during active sampling. It features a low-power sleep mode that reduces current consumption to just 2mA, which can be activated via a specific serial command. For continuous operation, ensure your power source can provide at least 5V @ 100mA, and consider utilizing the sleep function during idle periods to extend the lifespan of the internal fan and laser diode.

How does the built-in fan affect the sensor's operation and accuracy?

The integrated fan is critical for the sensor's accuracy and stability. It actively draws a consistent volume of ambient air through the laser scattering chamber, ensuring the Particle count is representative of the environment and not subject to passive diffusion inconsistencies. This active sampling provides reliable readings even in still air conditions and contributes to the sensor's fast 1-second response time to changing particulate concentrations.

What is the measurement range and resolution of the SDS011 for PM2.5?

The SDS011 measures mass concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 from 0.0 up to 999.9 micrograms per Cubic Sensor meter (µg/m³). It offers a high resolution of 0.3 µg/m³, meaning it can detect very small changes in concentration. The sensor is designed to detect particles with diameters as small as 0.3 micrometers, making it sensitive to fine particulate matter common in urban and industrial environments.
