Description

The LIGHTRANGER 10 CLICK leverages STMicroelectronics’ FlightSense® technology via the VL53L4CX sensor. This Time-of-Flight (ToF) module measures absolute distance by calculating the time for emitted infrared light to reflect off a target and return, providing measurements independent of target color and reflectance. Its advanced histogram algorithms offer immunity to cover glass crosstalk for targets beyond 80cm and include dynamic smudge compensation for closer ranges.

The board is designed for seamless integration into the mikroBUS ecosystem, providing a standardized footprint for rapid development. Communication is handled via a two-wire I2C interface, supporting clock frequencies up to 1MHz for fast data transfer. An onboard enable pin (routed to CS) controls the sensor’s boot sequence, while an interrupt pin signals when new ranging data is available, enabling efficient, event-driven system design.

Key Features

  • High-performance VL53L4CX ToF sensor with a ranging capability from a few centimeters up to 6 meters.
  • ST's patented multi-object detection and histogram algorithms for robust performance in varied conditions.
  • Cover glass crosstalk immunity for distances greater than 80cm and dynamic optical smudge compensation.
  • Standard I2C digital interface with 1MHz maximum clock speed for straightforward MCU communication.
  • Integrated enable (EN) and interrupt (INT) pins for low-power control and efficient data polling.
  • Designed exclusively for 3.3V logic and power supply, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of modern microcontrollers.
  • Compact S-size form factor (28.6mm x 25.4mm) conforming to the mikroBUS Click board standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage for the LIGHTRANGER 10 CLICK board?

The LIGHTRANGER 10 CLICK board operates exclusively at 3.3V DC for both power and logic levels. It is not 5V tolerant. If interfacing with a microcontroller using a different logic voltage (e.g., 5V), you must use an appropriate bidirectional logic level converter on the I2C lines (SDA, SCL) to prevent damage to the sensor.

How do I communicate with the VL53L4CX sensor on this Click board?

Communication is via the standard I2C (2-wire) serial interface. The board connects the sensor's SDA and SCL pins directly to the corresponding lines on the mikroBUS socket. You can use the provided Mikroe software library to configure the sensor and read distance data. The I2C bus supports clock frequencies up to 1MHz for high-speed data transfer.

What are the functions of the EN and INT pins on this module?

The Enable (EN) pin, routed to the mikroBUS CS pin, controls the sensor's power-on boot sequence. Pulling it low puts the sensor into a hardware shutdown mode. The Interrupt (INT) pin signals when a new ranging measurement is complete, allowing your MCU to use an interrupt-driven routine instead of polling, which improves system efficiency and reduces power consumption.

Is this sensor suitable for outdoor use or in bright sunlight?

While the VL53L4CX sensor has improved ambient light rejection compared to earlier models, intense direct sunlight can still saturate the SPAD (Single Photon Avalanche Diode) detectors and degrade performance. It is primarily designed for indoor applications or controlled lighting conditions. For reliable outdoor operation, consider adding a physical sunshade or optical filter.
