Description

The GY-51 module is built around the STMicroelectronics LSM303DLH, a system-in-package combining a MEMS accelerometer and magnetometer. The accelerometer uses capacitive sensing elements, while the magnetometer employs anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR) technology. Both sensors feature integrated 12-bit A/D converters and signal conditioning circuits, outputting calibrated digital data via the I2C bus.

This integration allows for full 6-degree-of-freedom (6DOF) motion tracking, including linear acceleration and heading relative to the Earth’s magnetic field. The module’s design includes necessary pull-up resistors and decoupling capacitors, making it a plug-and-play solution for prototyping and embedded systems requiring inertial measurement and compass functionality.

Key Features

  • High-precision 3-axis accelerometer with user-selectable full-scale ranges of ±2g, ±4g, and ±8g.
  • 3-axis magnetometer with programmable full-scale field ranges from ±1.3 to ±8.1 gauss for precise heading detection.
  • Digital I2C serial interface supports standard (100kHz) and fast (400kHz) mode communication.
  • Low-power operating modes for battery-sensitive applications.
  • Integrated temperature sensor for device monitoring and compensation.
  • Fully calibrated factory-trimmed sensors for immediate use without complex calibration routines.
  • Compact and robust PCB design with 0.1" pitch header pins for easy breadboard and prototype board integration.

Applications

  • Robotics navigation and balancing systems for tilt-compensated compass heading.
  • UAV (drone) flight controllers for attitude and heading reference system (AHRS) data.
  • Wearable device motion tracking and gesture recognition.
  • Industrial equipment monitoring for vibration detection and orientation sensing.
  • Interactive gaming controllers and virtual reality input devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the GY-51 LSM303DLH module?

The module operates from 3.0 to 5.0 volts DC. This range makes it directly compatible with both 3.3V logic systems (like Raspberry Pi, ESP32) and 5V systems (like standard Arduino boards) without requiring a logic level converter.

How do I connect and communicate with this sensor module?

Communication is via the I2C serial protocol. Connect the module's SDA and SCL pins to the corresponding pins on your microcontroller, along with VCC (3-5V) and GND. The I2C address of the LSM303DLH is configurable, typically 0x1E for the magnetometer and 0x19 for the accelerometer.

Can I select different measurement ranges for the accelerometer and magnetometer?

Yes, both sensors have programmable full-scale ranges. The accelerometer can be set to ±2g, ±4g, or ±8g via I2C commands. The magnetometer offers seven field ranges from ±1.3 gauss to ±8.1 gauss, allowing optimization for sensitivity or maximum field strength in your specific application.

Is this module suitable for creating a tilt-compensated electronic compass?

Absolutely. The integrated 3-axis accelerometer and 3-axis magnetometer provide the necessary data to calculate heading (yaw) while compensating for device tilt (pitch and roll). This requires sensor fusion algorithms, which can be implemented on a host microcontroller using the raw digital data from the module.
