Description

The LightWare LW20/C MicroLiDAR employs a 905nm Class 1M eye-safe laser for precise time-of-flight (ToF) distance measurement. Its robust IP67-rated housing protects the internal optics from dust and water ingress, making it suitable for demanding aerial and mobile robotic applications. The sensor outputs both first and last return signals simultaneously, providing enhanced data for complex environmental mapping.

Designed for low-power, high-performance integration, it operates from a 4.5V to 5.5V DC supply. The configurable update rate allows optimization for either high-speed dynamic sensing or lower-power, precision altitude hold. Its small form factor and minimal weight make it the de facto standard for micro drones and UAVs requiring reliable long-range sensing.

Key Features

  • Long-range 905nm laser ToF sensor with up to 100m measurement capability.
  • Robust IP67-rated aluminum housing for dustproof and waterproof operation.
  • Extremely lightweight (19g) and compact form factor (30x20x43mm) for SWaP-constrained designs.
  • Configurable high-speed data output, adjustable from 48 to 5000 readings per second.
  • Dual-interface flexibility with Serial UART and I2C communication protocols (3.3V TTL, 5V tolerant).
  • Class 1M laser product, ensuring eye safety for all operational conditions.
  • Simultaneous output of first and last return signals for advanced terrain analysis.
  • Wide operating temperature range from -10°C to +50°C.

Applications

  • Drone and UAV altitude above ground level (AGL) measurement and terrain following.
  • Obstacle detection and sense-and-avoid systems for autonomous vehicles and robots.
  • Precision position hold and assisted take-off/landing sequences for aerial platforms.
  • Long-range distance measurement for IoT environmental monitoring and mapping.
  • Integration into robotic navigation stacks for localization and spatial awareness.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum operating range of the LW20/C LiDAR sensor?

The LightWare LW20/C MicroLiDAR has a maximum detection range of up to 100 meters under optimal conditions. The actual measurable distance can be influenced by target reflectivity and ambient light.

What communication protocols does this sensor support?

The sensor supports two digital communication interfaces: Serial UART (TTL) and I2C. Both interfaces operate at 3.3V logic levels but are 5V tolerant, providing flexibility for integration with various microcontrollers and flight controllers like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, PX4, and ArduPilot.

Is the laser in this module safe for use around people?

Yes, the LW20/C uses a 905nm laser classified as Class 1M, which is eye-safe under all normal conditions of use. This makes it suitable for applications on drones and vehicles operating in environments where people may be present.

What is the sensor's update rate and can it be changed?

The data output rate is fully configurable from 48 readings per second up to 5000 readings per second. You can adjust this via the provided Serial or I2C commands using LightWare Studio software or custom code to balance between measurement speed and power consumption.

How do I power the LW20/C sensor?

Power the sensor with a regulated DC supply between 4.5V and 5.5V, connected via the included cable. Ensure your power source can provide sufficient current for the selected high-speed update modes. The sensor includes reverse polarity protection.
