The KY-039 sensor operates on the principle of photoplethysmography (PPG). The IR LED illuminates the fingertip tissue, and the phototransistor detects the varying intensity of reflected light caused by pulsatile blood flow. This analog signal corresponds to the heartbeat waveform, which can be processed by a microcontroller’s ADC to calculate heart rate.
The module is a basic, unamplified sensor designed for prototyping. Signal quality is highly dependent on ambient light shielding and fingertip placement. For stable readings, it is recommended to enclose the sensor in a light-blocking enclosure and implement software filtering, such as moving average or low-pass algorithms, to mitigate noise from AC lighting (50/60 Hz) and motion artifacts.
