Description

The KSD301 is a bimetallic disc thermostat, a robust and cost-effective solution for temperature monitoring and control. The ceramic body ensures excellent heat transfer to the internal bimetallic element while providing high dielectric strength. When the ambient temperature reaches the factory-calibrated 120°C trip point, the bimetallic disc snaps, mechanically opening the normally closed contacts to break the circuit.

This device functions as a one-shot, automatic reset switch. Once the temperature cools below the reset point (typically several degrees below the trip point), the contacts will close again, restoring power. This makes it ideal for applications requiring cyclic thermal protection without manual intervention. Its simple, non-polarized design allows for easy integration into AC or DC power lines.

Key Features

  • Ceramic Encapsulation: Provides superior thermal response, electrical isolation, and flame-retardant properties.
  • Precision Bimetallic Actuator: Ensures accurate and repeatable switching at the specified 120°C temperature.
  • High-Power Switching Capacity: Rated for 16A at 250V AC, suitable for controlling heaters, motors, or transformers directly.
  • Normally Closed (NC) Configuration: Default closed circuit opens upon over-temperature, ideal for safety cutoff applications.
  • Automatic Reset: Contacts re-close once temperature drops, enabling unattended cyclic operation.
  • Compact and Mountable: Small footprint with mounting holes for secure installation near heat sources.
  • Wide Operating Voltage: Compatible with common line voltages up to 250V AC.

Applications

  • Over-temperature protection in power supplies, battery chargers, and transformers.
  • Temperature control in coffee makers, water heaters, and small household appliances.
  • Thermal cutoff safety in electric motors, solenoids, and industrial control cabinets.
  • Heat management in 3D printer heated beds, soldering equipment, and lab instruments.
  • Preventive safety circuit in lighting ballasts and power conversion modules.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Normally Closed (NC) and Normally Open (NO) for this thermostat?

The KSD301 is a Normally Closed (NC) switch. This means the electrical contacts are closed, allowing current to flow, at temperatures below its 120°C setpoint. When the temperature rises to 120°C, the internal bimetallic element snaps and opens the contacts, breaking the circuit. A Normally Open (NO) version would behave oppositely, closing the circuit only when the temperature is reached.

Can I use this KSD301 switch with DC voltage, or is it AC only?

While primarily rated for 250V AC, this bimetallic mechanical switch can typically handle comparable DC voltages. However, switching DC loads, especially inductive ones like motors, can cause more contact arcing and wear. For optimal longevity with DC applications, it is recommended to derate the current or use it within a lower voltage DC circuit, such as 12V or 24V systems.

How do I install and wire this temperature control switch?

Installation is straightforward. Securely mount the thermostat's ceramic body directly onto or adjacent to the heat source you need to monitor using its mounting holes. Electrically, it is wired in series with the load (e.g., a heater) on the line (hot) side of the AC circuit. The two terminals are not polarized, so you can connect either wire to either terminal. Ensure all connections are tight and properly insulated.

Is the 120°C trip temperature adjustable or fixed?

The trip temperature for the KSD301 is fixed and factory-calibrated to 120°C. It is not user-adjustable. The switch will consistently open at this setpoint. If you require a different trip temperature, you must select a different model from the KSD series (e.g., KSD302, KSD303) that is specified for your desired temperature rating.
