Description

The DFRobot Gravity PM2.5 Air Quality Sensor employs a laser scattering detection principle. A laser diode irradiates airborne particles, and a photodetector collects the scattered light at a specific angle. An onboard microprocessor uses the Mie scattering theory algorithm to calculate Particle size distribution and output real-time mass concentration data for PM1.0, PM2.5, and PM10 via a digital I2C or UART interface.

Designed for seamless integration, the module features the standard DFRobot Gravity 4-pin connector, simplifying wiring with popular development boards. Its six-sided shielding provides strong resistance to external optical and electrical interference, ensuring stable readings in varied environments from indoor air quality monitoring to portable environmental sensing projects.

Key Features

  • High-precision laser scattering sensor with minimum detectable Particle size of 0.3 µm.
  • Digital output via I2C (default) or UART serial interface; logic level compatible with 3.3V and 5V systems.
  • Real-time continuous data acquisition with a comprehensive response time of ≤10 seconds.
  • Ultra-thin profile (14 mm height) and compact footprint for integration into portable devices and enclosed projects.
  • Six-sided full metal shielding provides excellent anti-interference performance for reliable operation.
  • Wide operating temperature range from -10°C to +60°C for indoor and sheltered outdoor use.
  • Low power consumption with a maximum working current of 100 mA and standby current ≤2 mA.
  • Gravity interface system allows for tool-free connection and rapid prototyping.

Applications

  • Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) monitors for homes, offices, and schools.
  • Portable environmental sensing devices and wearable air quality trackers.
  • HVAC system integration for smart ventilation control based on particulate levels.
  • Air purification system feedback control and filter life monitoring.
  • Educational and research projects analyzing particulate pollution sources.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage and how do I power this sensor?

The sensor requires a stable 5V DC power supply via its Gravity connector. The maximum operating current is 100 mA. Ensure your power source (e.g., Arduino 5V pin or a regulated 5V supply) can provide sufficient current. The digital I/O pins are 3.3V logic level compatible.

How do I communicate with the sensor? Is it I2C or UART?

The module supports both I2C and UART (serial) communication protocols. It ships configured for I2C by default. You can switch to UART mode by soldering a Jumper on the board. Use the provided Gravity cable to connect to your microcontroller's corresponding I2C or serial pins.

What Particle sizes and concentration ranges does it measure?

It measures particulate concentrations in three size bins: PM1.0 (0.3–1.0 µm), PM2.5 (1.0–2.5 µm), and PM10 (2.5–10 µm). The effective mass concentration range for PM2.5 is 0–500 µg/m³, with a maximum range exceeding 1000 µg/m³. The output resolution is 1 µg/m³.

Is this sensor suitable for outdoor use?

While it operates from -10°C to +60°C, it is primarily designed for indoor or sheltered outdoor applications. For prolonged outdoor exposure, consider protective enclosures to shield it from direct rain, condensation, and extreme weather, as it is not officially IP-rated.

Does DFRobot provide sample code for this sensor?

Yes, DFRobot provides comprehensive Arduino libraries and sample code for both I2C and UART communication modes on their official website and GitHub repository. The code demonstrates how to initialize the sensor, read particulate concentration values, and handle data output.
