Description

The TMAG5273 (A2) magnetometer utilizes three independent Hall-effect sensors to measure magnetic field strength along orthogonal axes. Each axis feeds into a high-resolution 12-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC), providing digital output via a configurable I2C interface. Its integrated CORDIC (COordinate Rotation DIgital Computer) engine performs real-time trigonometric calculations, enabling precise 360° angle measurement for both on-axis and off-axis magnetic sources without external processing.

Designed for reliability in embedded and industrial environments, the module includes a built-in temperature sensor for thermal compensation, reducing sensitivity drift. It supports configurable power modes, including active, wake/sleep, and deep sleep, optimizing energy consumption from 2.3mA active down to 5nA sleep current. The board features 3.3V and 5V logic level compatibility and is pre-assembled with STEMMA QT (JST-SH) connectors for solder-free prototyping and system integration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the TMAG5273 module?

The module is designed for 3.3V operation but includes level shifting to be fully compatible with both 3.3V and 5V logic systems. The I2C bus and power input (VIN) accept 3.3V to 5V DC. Always ensure your host microcontroller's I2C voltage matches the module's logic level.

How do I configure the I2C address, and what is the default?

The TMAG5273 sensor has a factory-programmed I2C address. This address can be user-reconfigured via I2C commands, but it will revert to the factory default after a power-on reset. Consult the sensor's datasheet for the specific default address and the register map for the address configuration procedure.

Can this sensor measure angles in three dimensions?

Yes. The integrated CORDIC engine calculates 2D angles (e.g., in the XY plane) from the magnetic field Vector Technics components. For full 3D orientation (pitch, roll, yaw), you typically combine the magnetometer data with an accelerometer and gyroscope in a sensor fusion algorithm, as the magnetometer primarily provides heading reference.

What is the purpose of the STEMMA QT connectors?

STEMMA QT connectors (JST-SH 4-pin) provide a plug-and-play, solderless connection system. They allow you to daisy-chain multiple I2C sensors and actuators using pre-made cables, significantly speeding up prototyping and system integration with compatible Adafruit, SparkFun, and other QT/Qwiic ecosystem boards.

How does the temperature sensor and compensation work?

The built-in temperature sensor monitors die temperature. The sensor includes integrated compensation algorithms that can be applied to the magnetic readings to correct for sensitivity drift (typically ~5%) across the operating temperature range, improving accuracy for applications using different magnet types like ferrite or neodymium.
