Description

The LPS33HW from STMicroelectronics is an absolute pressure sensor engineered for reliability in damp or chemically aggressive environments. Its sensing core is housed within a ceramic LGA package and encapsulated with a specialized waterproof gel, providing robust protection against water ingress mixed with chlorine, solvents, and detergents. This design ensures long-term stability and accurate readings even under harsh conditions.

The module delivers calibrated pressure data with a high-resolution 24-bit ADC and includes integrated 16-bit temperature sensing for compensation, maintaining accuracy across its full operating temperature range. It features an adjustable output data rate and an integrated low-pass filter to minimize signal noise. The breakout board from Adafruit incorporates necessary support circuitry, including voltage regulation and logic level translation, making it directly compatible with both 3.3V and 5V development platforms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the entire breakout board waterproof?

No, only the STMicroelectronics LPS33HW sensor element itself is water and chemically resistant due to its ceramic package and protective gel encapsulation. The Adafruit breakout PCB and its components are not waterproof. For deployment in wet environments, the board must be potted or enclosed in a waterproof epoxy or housing.

What is the operating voltage range and logic compatibility?

The module operates from a 3V to 5V DC supply. It features onboard logic level shifting, making its I2C and SPI communication lines directly compatible with both 3.3V microcontrollers (like Raspberry Pi or Feather boards) and 5V systems (like classic Arduino Uno) without requiring external level shifters.

Can I use the SPI interface with Raspberry Pi or CircuitPython?

Currently, SPI support in the provided Adafruit libraries is implemented for the Arduino platform only. For Raspberry Pi and CircuitPython, communication is supported via the I2C interface. You should connect using the I2C pins (SCL, SDA) for these platforms.

How do I connect the sensor using the STEMMA QT connectors?

The STEMMA QT connectors are 4-pin JST PH sockets. Use a compatible STEMMA QT cable (not included) to connect the board's output connector to your microcontroller's I2C port. This provides solderless connection for VIN, GND, SCL, and SDA. For direct pin soldering, standard 0.1"-pitch headers are also provided.

What is the purpose of the metal port on the sensor?

The metal port is the pressure inlet. It features a lip suitable for installing a standard O-ring (not included) to create a sealed connection to tubing or a pressurized system. Important: This port is not designed for high mechanical shear force; ensure pressure fittings are supported to avoid damaging the solder joints.
