Description

The Adafruit VCNL4030 sensor module combines a proximity sensor and an ambient light sensor (ALS) on a single chip. The proximity function uses a calibrated infrared LED and a photodiode to detect the presence and approximate distance of objects up to 300mm through reflected IR light. The integrated ALS provides accurate ambient light intensity measurements across a broad dynamic range, from very dim to bright indoor lighting conditions.

Communication is handled via a standard I2C interface, with the onboard STEMMA QT / Qwiic connectors enabling rapid, solderless daisy-chaining with other compatible modules. The sensor’s key parameters, including IR LED current, integration time, and sensitivity thresholds, are fully configurable via registers, allowing developers to balance measurement speed, accuracy, and power consumption for specific applications.

Key Features

  • Integrated Proximity & Light Sensing: Combines a calibrated IR proximity sensor and a high-dynamic-range ambient light sensor on a single, compact breakout.
  • Configurable Performance: Adjustable IR LED current (up to 200mA), integration time, and sensitivity thresholds for application-specific optimization.
  • Plug-and-Play Connectivity: Features STEMMA QT / Qwiic 4-pin JST-SH connectors for robust, solderless I2C system integration.
  • Broad Logic-Level Compatibility: Onboard level shifting ensures seamless operation with both 3.3V and 5V microcontrollers and SBCs.
  • Event-Driven Operation: Programmable interrupt pin alerts the host controller upon proximity or light threshold events, reducing polling overhead.
  • Compact & Durable Design: The breakout board provides a robust interface with clearly labeled pins and mounting holes for secure installation.

Applications

  • Display backlight and keyboard backlight automation based on ambient light levels.
  • Touchless proximity detection for interactive kiosks, appliances, and sanitary fixtures.
  • Object presence sensing for robotics, inventory management, and automated systems.
  • Light-sensitive data logging and environmental monitoring in IoT sensor nodes.
  • Energy-saving controls in smart home and office automation systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the default I2C address of the VCNL4030 sensor?

The default I2C address for the Adafruit VCNL4030 breakout is 0x60 (7-bit). This address is fixed and cannot be changed via hardware, allowing only one sensor per I2C bus unless an external multiplexer is used.

How do I power and interface this sensor with a 5V Arduino?

Connect the board's VIN pin to your Arduino's 5V output and GND to GND. For I2C, connect the SDA and SCL pins to the corresponding pins on your Arduino (A4/A5 on Uno). The onboard logic level shifter ensures safe communication. You can also use the STEMMA QT connector with a compatible cable.

Can I adjust the sensing range and sensitivity of the proximity function?

Yes, the proximity sensing performance is highly configurable. You can adjust the IR LED current (up to 200mA) for stronger signal emission and modify the integration time and sensitivity thresholds via I2C registers. This allows optimization for different object reflectivities, ambient light conditions, and desired update rates.

Does this sensor support interrupt-driven operation?

Yes, the VCNL4030 features a programmable interrupt output pin. You can configure thresholds for both proximity (high/low) and ambient light (high/low) measurements. When a threshold is crossed, the INT pin asserts, allowing your microcontroller to sleep until an event occurs, which is ideal for power-efficient designs.
