Description

The Mikroe Alcohol Click utilizes an MQ-3 gas sensor, which employs a tin dioxide (SnO2) semiconductor sensing layer. In clean air, the conductivity of this layer is low. When alcohol vapor is present, the conductivity increases proportionally to the gas concentration, generating a corresponding analog voltage signal on the AN pin.

Designed for 5V operation and compatible with the mikroBUS socket standard, this Click board simplifies integration into embedded systems for gas monitoring. The included potentiometer allows for precise adjustment of the sensor’s load resistance, enabling calibration for optimal sensitivity and stability in specific application environments.

Key Features

  • Equipped with the industry-standard MQ-3 alcohol gas sensor for reliable detection.
  • Provides a linear analog output proportional to alcohol concentration for straightforward data acquisition.
  • Features an on-board trimming potentiometer for environmental calibration and sensitivity tuning.
  • Compact MikroBUS form factor (42.9 x 25.4 mm) for easy stacking on host boards.
  • Designed for stable operation with a 5V DC power supply.
  • High-value build optimized for prototyping and integration into portable detection systems.

Applications

  • Portable personal alcohol breathalyzers and BAC estimation devices.
  • Industrial safety monitors for alcohol vapor in laboratories or manufacturing areas.
  • Embedded air quality monitoring systems for detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
  • Educational and prototyping platforms for sensor interfacing and gas detection projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage for the Mikroe Alcohol Click?

The Mikroe Alcohol Click is designed to run on a 5V DC power supply. It is not recommended to use 3.3V logic directly for powering the sensor, as the MQ-3 element requires 5V for proper heater operation and sensitivity.

How do I interface the Alcohol Click with my microcontroller?

The board communicates via a single analog output pin (AN) on the mikroBUS header. Connect this pin to an ADC input on your microcontroller (e.g., STM32, PIC, Arduino) to read the voltage signal, which varies with alcohol concentration. Ensure your host board provides a 5V supply to the mikroBUS VCC pin.

How do I calibrate the sensor for my environment?

Use the on-board potentiometer to adjust the load resistance (RL) of the sensor circuit. For initial calibration, expose the sensor to clean air and adjust the pot until the output voltage reads a baseline value specified in the datasheet. This compensates for ambient conditions and sensor variance.

What does the sensitivity rating 'Rs(in air)/Rs(0.4mg/l alcohol)≥5' mean?

This indicates the sensor's responsiveness. It means the resistance of the sensor in clean air (Rs) is at least 5 times greater than its resistance when exposed to a 0.4 mg/l alcohol concentration. A higher ratio signifies better sensitivity to low alcohol concentrations.
