Description

The Adafruit MPRLS Ported Pressure Sensor Breakout integrates a MEMS-based, silicone-gel protected pressure sensing element with a factory-calibrated 24-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC). This provides high-resolution, temperature-compensated absolute pressure readings, ideal for applications requiring precise monitoring of sealed or pressurized environments.

The sensor’s key differentiator is its integrated stainless steel barbed port, enabling direct connection to tubing for measuring pressure within closed systems like pneumatic controls, vacuum chambers, or assistive technology interfaces. The breakout board includes essential signal conditioning, 3.3V power regulation, and logic level shifting, ensuring robust and reliable performance across a wide range of development platforms from 5V Arduino to 3.3V Raspberry Pi and ESP32 boards.

Key Features

  • Integrated stainless steel barbed port for direct pneumatic tubing connection.
  • High-resolution 24-bit ADC provides precise, low-noise pressure measurement.
  • Factory calibrated and temperature compensated for stable output.
  • Onboard 3.3V voltage regulator and I2C level shifting for broad 3-5V system compatibility.
  • Compact and lightweight PCB breakout with standard 0.1" pin spacing.
  • Comprehensive open-source libraries and example code for Arduino & CircuitPython.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for this MPRLS breakout board?

The board can be powered with a DC supply voltage between 3V and 5V. It features an onboard 3.3V regulator that powers the sensor chip and provides logic level shifting for the I2C lines, making it safe to use with both 3.3V and 5V microcontrollers.

What is the I2C address and how do I connect it to my microcontroller?

The default I2C address is 0x18. Connect the board's VIN and GND pins to your power supply (3-5V). Then connect the SDA and SCL pins to the corresponding I2C data and clock lines on your microcontroller (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32). No pull-up resistors are required as they are included on the breakout.

Can I use this sensor to measure differential pressure or vacuum?

This sensor measures absolute pressure, referenced to a vacuum. It reads 0 PSI in a perfect vacuum and approximately 14.5 PSI at SEA level ambient pressure. It can measure positive pressure up to 25 PSI and can also read pressures below atmospheric (i.e., vacuum), down to its minimum reading of 0 PSI.

What size tubing fits the stainless steel port?

The stainless steel barbed port has an outer diameter of 2.5mm and a length of 3.7mm. It is designed to accept flexible tubing with an inner diameter of approximately 2.5mm (commonly 1/8" or 3mm ID tubing may require a tight fit or a small adapter). The package does not include tubing.
