Description

The SparkFun BOB-09322 is a breakout board for the GP1A57HRJ00F photo interrupter, a transmissive optical sensor consisting of an infrared LED emitter and a phototransistor receiver aligned across a 10mm gap. When an object passes through this gap, it interrupts the infrared beam, causing the phototransistor’s state to change. This state change is conditioned on-board to produce a clean digital TTL-compatible signal.

The module outputs a logic high voltage (>4.9V) when the beam is clear and a logic low (<0.4V) when obstructed, making it directly compatible with 5V microcontroller logic levels on platforms like Arduino, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi (with level shifting). The included current-limiting resistor for the IR emitter simplifies integration, requiring only a power supply connection for immediate operation in object counting, limit switch, or rotary encoder applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage for this photo interrupter breakout?

The breakout is designed for a 5V DC supply, which powers the onboard infrared LED emitter. The digital output signal is TTL-compatible, providing a logic high above 4.9V and a logic low below 0.4V, making it directly suitable for 5V microcontroller systems like Arduino Uno.

How do I connect and use this sensor with an Arduino?

Connect the breakout's PWR pin to Arduino 5V, GND to GND, and the SIG pin to any digital input pin. The sensor outputs a HIGH signal when the beam is clear and a LOW when blocked. You can read this state with `digitalRead()` to detect object presence or count interruptions.

What is the sensing gap and how does it affect detection?

The sensor has a fixed 10mm gap between the emitter and receiver, with a 1.8mm wide slit. An object must pass through this gap to interrupt the infrared beam. The gap width defines the maximum object thickness that can be detected, while the slit width influences the resolution for detecting thin objects.

Can this sensor be used for speed measurement or rotary encoding?

Yes, it is well-suited for rotary encoding and speed measurement. By placing a slotted disk or flag on a rotating shaft through the optical gap, the digital pulses generated can be counted or timed by a microcontroller to calculate RPM or angular position.
