Description

The Winsen MQ-4 methane gas sensor utilizes a tin dioxide (SnO2) semiconductor sensing element. In clean air, the sensor’s conductivity is low. When methane gas is present, the conductivity increases proportionally with the gas concentration. This change in conductivity is converted into a corresponding output voltage signal through a straightforward external circuit.

The module is designed for reliable, long-term operation and features a standard bakelite and metal cap encapsulation for physical durability. It exhibits high sensitivity to methane while offering inherent resistance to interference from alcohol and other common gases, making it a practical choice for concentration monitoring.

Key Features

  • Semiconductor sensing technology using SnO2 for methane detection.
  • Wide detecting range from 300 to 10,000 ppm of methane (CH4).
  • Dual-mode output: analog voltage signal (2.5–4.0V in 5000 ppm) and digital threshold trigger.
  • Requires a 5.0V AC or DC heater voltage for proper sensor operation.
  • High sensitivity ratio: Rs(in air)/Rs(in 5000ppm CH4) > 5.
  • Robust bakelite body with a metal cap for mechanical protection.
  • Characterized under standard conditions of 20°C and 55% ±5% RH.
  • Compact form factor (19mm diameter, 24mm length) for space-constrained designs.

Applications

  • Residential and commercial natural gas leak detection systems.
  • Methane concentration monitoring in biogas production and landfill sites.
  • Safety monitoring in industrial environments where methane is a process gas.
  • Integration into portable air quality monitors and multi-gas detectors.
  • Educational projects and prototypes for environmental sensing with microcontrollers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage for the MQ-4 sensor heater?

The MQ-4 sensor's heater requires a stable 5.0 volts, which can be supplied as either AC or DC. This voltage is critical for bringing the SnO2 sensing element to its optimal operating temperature. The module's signal output circuitry is also designed to work with standard 5V microcontroller logic levels.

How do I interface the MQ-4 module with an Arduino?

You can interface the MQ-4 module with an Arduino using either its analog or digital output pins. For analog reading, connect the module's analog output pin to an Arduino analog input (A0-A7) to measure the voltage proportional to gas concentration. For a digital trigger, connect the digital output pin to a digital input pin on the Arduino; this pin goes HIGH or LOW when the gas concentration exceeds a preset threshold, which is adjustable via a potentiometer on the module.

Does the MQ-4 sensor require calibration?

Yes, for accurate quantitative measurement, the MQ-4 sensor requires calibration against known methane concentrations. The sensor's output can drift over time and is influenced by environmental temperature and humidity. For simple presence detection, the factory-set digital threshold may be sufficient, but for reliable ppm readings, periodic calibration in clean air and a known target gas is recommended.

What gases can interfere with the MQ-4 sensor's readings?

The MQ-4 sensor is specifically sensitive to methane (CH4) but can also respond to other combustible gases, including alcohol vapors, to a lesser degree. Its design offers some anti-interference to alcohol, but high concentrations of other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or hydrogen may affect the reading. It is best used in applications where methane is the primary gas of concern.
