Description

The MPM30-C4 sensor employs an infrared light scattering technique to detect and quantify airborne particulate matter. An internal LED illuminates particles passing through the sensing chamber, and a photodetector measures the scattered light intensity, which is correlated to mass concentration. The onboard signal processor outputs calibrated data via UART or a pulse-width modulated (PWM) signal.

Engineered for long-term reliability in varied environments, the sensor features a sealed optical path to minimize contamination and drift. Its specified accuracy of ±15 µg/m³ or ±15% (whichever is greater) under controlled conditions makes it suitable for trend monitoring in residential, commercial, and light industrial air quality applications. The module requires a clean, stable 5V power supply with minimal ripple for optimal performance.

Key Features

  • Infrared PM sensing technology for reliable detection of PM0.3 to PM10 particles.
  • Selectable UART (serial) or PWM output for flexible system integration.
  • Fast response and stabilization time of ≤10 seconds from power-on.
  • Wide operating temperature and humidity range for robust environmental deployment.
  • Extended service life of ≥8 years under typical operating conditions.
  • Compact form factor (46 x 34 x 18.15 mm) for space-constrained designs.
  • Requires stable 5V DC input with low ripple (<50mV) for accurate measurements.

Applications

  • Embedded air quality monitors and portable PM2.5 detectors.
  • HVAC system air filter monitoring and automatic purifier control.
  • Environmental sensing nodes for smart building and IoT networks.
  • Indoor air quality assessment in offices, schools, and residential spaces.
  • Pollution source tracking and environmental research data logging.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the UART and PWM output modes on the MPM30-C4?

The UART output provides serial digital data packets containing calibrated PM2.5 and PM10 concentration values, ideal for microcontrollers like Arduino or ESP32. The PWM output provides a variable duty cycle signal where the pulse width correlates to concentration, suitable for simple analog reading or frequency measurement without a serial protocol.

What power supply requirements are critical for the MPM30-C4 sensor?

The sensor requires a stable 5V DC supply with a tolerance of ±5% (4.75V to 5.25V). The power ripple must be kept below 50mV peak-to-peak to prevent measurement noise and instability. A well-regulated power source or additional filtering is recommended for accurate readings.

How do I interface the MPM30-C4 with an Arduino or Raspberry Pi?

For UART interface, connect the sensor's TX pin to your microcontroller's RX pin and provide common ground and 5V power. Use a serial library to read the data packets. For PWM interface, connect the output pin to a digital input capable of pulse measurement. Note: the module uses a ZH1.5mm-4P connector, so a matching cable or breakout board is required.

What is the sensor's accuracy and what factors affect it?

The specified accuracy is ±15 µg/m³ or ±15% of the reading, whichever is greater, under controlled conditions of 25±2°C and 50±10% RH. Accuracy can be affected by extreme temperatures, high humidity, significant power supply noise, or contamination of the optical chamber over time. Regular maintenance is not typical, but keeping the air inlet clean is advised.

Can this sensor be used outdoors or in industrial environments?

Yes, its operating range of -20°C to +75°C and 0-95% RH (non-condensing) allows for outdoor use in protected enclosures. However, for harsh industrial environments with oil mist, high concentrations of large dust, or condensing humidity, additional protective housing and an intake filter are strongly recommended to protect the internal optics and ensure long-term reliability.
