Description

This kit provides a complete, low-power air quality monitoring platform. The SEN55 sensor utilizes laser scattering for precise particulate matter (PM) detection across four size channels, combined with a MOX sensor for VOC index and integrated humidity/temperature sensing. The SCD40 sensor employs Sensirion’s Photoacoustic NDIR (PAS) technology for accurate, low-power CO2 measurement, also featuring onboard RH and temperature compensation.

Data acquisition and system control are managed by the M5StampS3, an ESP32-S3-based module offering robust Wi-Fi connectivity and processing power for local data logging or cloud transmission via the integrated EZDATA platform. The system is designed for periodic sampling, utilizing the RTC8563 and deep sleep modes to maximize battery life from the integrated 450mAh cell, making it suitable for portable or remote monitoring deployments.

Key Features

  • Dual high-precision Sensirion environmental sensors (SEN55 & SCD40) for comprehensive air quality profiling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What microcontrollers or platforms is this Air Quality Kit compatible with?

The kit is built around and programmed for the M5StampS3, which is based on the ESP32-S3 microcontroller. It is fully compatible with the Arduino IDE using the M5Stack core libraries, as well as the ESP-IDF framework. The Grove interface also allows it to interact with other M5Stack ecosystem modules.

How is the device powered and what is the expected battery life?

The kit includes an integrated 450mAh LiPo battery and can be charged via USB-C. Battery life is highly dependent on the sampling interval and Wi-Fi usage. Utilizing the built-in RTC8563 for periodic wake-up from deep sleep, with the display only updating during active periods, can extend operation to several days or weeks on a single charge.

Can the sensor data be accessed and logged without using the EZDATA cloud?

Yes. While pre-configured for the M5Stack EZDATA cloud platform, the device is fully programmable. You can use the provided UIFlow blocks or write Arduino/ESP-IDF code to read the SEN55 and SCD40 sensors via I2C, process the data locally, and transmit it via Wi-Fi to any other MQTT broker, web server, or custom cloud endpoint you define.

What is the measurement principle of the CO2 and particulate matter sensors?

The SCD40 CO2 sensor uses Sensirion's Photoacoustic NDIR (PAS) technology, which offers high accuracy and lower power consumption compared to traditional NDIR. The SEN55's particulate matter detection is based on laser scattering, providing mass concentration readings for PM1.0, PM2.5, PM4, and PM10, alongside a metal-oxide (MOX) sensor for VOC index.
