Description

The Winsen MC105 sensor operates on the catalytic combustion principle, utilizing a Wheatstone bridge configuration with a test element and a temperature/humidity compensating element. When combustible gas contacts the test element, its resistance increases, unbalancing the bridge and producing a voltage output that scales linearly with gas concentration.

Housed in a standard plastic encapsulation, the module is engineered for stable performance across a wide operating temperature range from -20°C to +70°C (with an extended option to -40°C). Its design ensures good repeatability, selectivity, and robustness against common sensor poisons, making it reliable for continuous monitoring applications.

Key Features

  • Catalytic combustion detection for a wide range of combustible gases.
  • Integrated compensation element for enhanced temperature and humidity stability.
  • Linear voltage output simplifies signal conditioning and ADC interfacing.
  • Fast response and recovery characteristics for real-time monitoring.
  • Constructed with materials resistant to H2S and organosilicon poisoning.
  • Plastic housing provides a durable and lightweight enclosure.
  • Optimized for low-voltage operation at 2.5V DC.
  • Suitable for continuous duty in industrial environments.

Applications

  • Industrial combustible gas leak detection systems for natural gas and LPG.
  • Fixed gas concentration meters and monitoring panels in chemical plants.
  • Portable and stationary combustible gas detectors for safety compliance.
  • Integrated alarm systems for residential and commercial gas appliances.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage for the Winsen MC105 sensor?

The MC105 requires a precise 2.5V DC supply with a tolerance of ±0.1V. It typically draws 150mA. Exceeding this voltage range can damage the sensor's catalytic bead, so proper voltage regulation is essential.

What gases can the MC105 sensor detect?

This catalytic combustion sensor is designed to detect a wide range of combustible gases, including natural gas (methane), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), carbon monoxide (CO), and various alkanes. It measures concentration as a percentage of the Lower Explosive Limit (%LEL).

How does the sensor output signal work?

The sensor provides a bridge voltage output. The Wheatstone bridge becomes unbalanced when gas contacts the active element, producing a voltage change linearly proportional to the gas concentration. This analog signal requires external conditioning or an ADC for microcontroller interfacing.

What is the sensor's response and recovery time?

The MC105 has a fast response time (T90) of ≤10 seconds to reach 90% of the final signal upon gas exposure. The recovery time (T90) to return to baseline after gas removal is ≤30 seconds, enabling near real-time monitoring.

Is the MC105 resistant to sensor poisoning?

Yes, the sensor is specifically designed with materials that resist poisoning by hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and organosilicon compounds, which are common contaminants that can degrade the performance and lifespan of standard catalytic beads.
