Description

The VL53L0X integrates a leading-edge SPAD (Single Photon Avalanche Diode) array and ST’s patented second-generation FlightSense technology. This combination enables precise time-of-flight measurement, delivering accurate distance data regardless of target reflectance, outperforming conventional IR proximity sensors. The module’s 940nm Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) is invisible to the human eye and coupled with internal infrared filters for enhanced ambient light immunity and robustness against optical crosstalk.

Designed for easy integration, the module operates from 2.6V to 5.5V, regulated internally to 2.8V, and communicates via a standard I2C protocol. Its compact form factor and low power consumption make it suitable for embedded systems, portable devices, and robotics applications requiring reliable proximity sensing or gesture recognition.

Key Features

  • STMicroelectronics VL53L0X sensor with FlightSense ToF technology.
  • Measures absolute distances from a few centimeters up to 2 meters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the VL53L0X module?

The module accepts a wide input voltage range from 2.6V to 5.5V DC. It features an onboard 2.8V linear regulator that powers the sensor core, making it compatible with both 3.3V and 5V microcontroller logic levels without requiring an external level shifter.

How do I communicate with the VL53L0X sensor?

Communication is via the I2C (Inter-Integrated Circuit) protocol. The module provides dedicated SDA (data) and SCL (clock) pins. The default I2C address is 0x29, but it can be changed programmatically if multiple sensors are used on the same bus. Standard Arduino Wire or platform-specific I2C libraries can be used.

What is the maximum measurable distance?

The VL53L0X can measure absolute distances up to approximately 2 meters under optimal conditions. Actual maximum range can be influenced by target reflectance, ambient light, and cover glass material. For best performance on dark or highly reflective surfaces, refer to the sensor's timing budget configuration in the datasheet.

Is the laser emitter safe for eyes?

Yes. The module uses a 940nm Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) which is classified as a Class 1 laser product. This wavelength is invisible to the human eye and is considered eye-safe under normal operating conditions, requiring no special safety precautions during handling or integration.

Can this sensor work outdoors or in bright sunlight?

While the VL53L0X includes internal IR filters for improved ambient light immunity, performance can degrade in direct, intense sunlight due to photon saturation of the SPAD receiver. It is best suited for indoor applications or shaded outdoor environments. For full-sun operation, consider sensors with higher ambient light rejection specifications.
