Adafruit APDS9999 Proximity, Lux Light & Color Sensor - STEMMA QT / Qwiic
The Adafruit APDS9999 is a multi-function I2C sensor module integrating proximity detection, true ambient lux measurement, and RGB color sensing. It features onboard voltage regulation and level shifting for seamless 3.3V/5V compatibility with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32, and other microcontrollers via its solderless STEMMA QT / Qwiic connectors.
Features
- 3-in-1 sensing: IR reflective proximity, RGB color, and true ambient lux measurement.
- I2C communication interface with configurable interrupt pin for threshold alerts.
- Onboard voltage regulator and level shifter for 3.3V and 5V system compatibility.
- Solderless connectivity via STEMMA QT / Qwiic 4-pin JST SH connectors.
- Compact, ready-to-use PCB design for rapid prototyping and integration.

The APDS9999 sensor combines a photodiode array and an integrated IR LED to perform three distinct sensing functions. For proximity, it emits infrared light and measures the intensity of the reflection from a nearby object, providing a distance estimate suitable for short-range detection up to approximately 150mm. For light sensing, it uses separate red, green, blue, and clear (RGBC) photodiodes to accurately measure ambient light levels in lux and discern color information.
The module includes an onboard voltage regulator and logic level shifting circuitry, allowing it to be powered and communicate directly with both 3.3V and 5V logic microcontrollers without external components. Its primary communication is via a standard I2C interface, and an interrupt pin can be configured to signal when specific light or proximity thresholds are crossed, reducing the need for continuous polling.
