Sharp Microelectronics GP2Y0D21YK0F Digital Distance Sensor, 1-bit Digital Output, Range: 13 cm
The Sharp Microelectronics GP2Y0D21YK0F is a compact digital infrared distance sensor providing a 1-bit (High/Low) output signal for object detection within a 13 cm range. It operates on a 4.5V to 5.5V supply, making it compatible with 5V microcontroller systems like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and industrial PLCs for simple presence/absence sensing.
Features
- 1-bit digital (High/Low) output for straightforward object presence detection within 13 cm.
- Integrated PSD (Position Sensitive Detector), IR LED, and signal processing circuit in a compact package.
- Low power consumption with a typical operating current of 33 mA at 5V.
- Minimal influence from object color and reflectivity for reliable detection.
- Factory-adjusted detection threshold; customer adjustment is also possible.

The Sharp Microelectronics GP2Y0D21YK0F is a short-range, digital output infrared distance sensor. It employs a PSD (Position Sensitive Detector) paired with an infrared LED and an integrated signal processing circuit to detect the presence or absence of an object within its calibrated 13 cm range. The sensor outputs a simple 1-bit digital signal (High or Low), eliminating the need for complex analog-to-digital conversion or signal interpretation.
Designed for reliability, the sensor’s detection algorithm uses sequential position detection and mean data processing to achieve high accuracy. Its performance is largely unaffected by the color or reflective properties of the target object. The sensor is factory-calibrated for its 13 cm threshold but can be re-adjusted to suit specific application requirements. It operates within an industrial temperature range of -10°C to +60°C.
