SparkFun TEMT6000 Ambient Light Sensor Breakout – SMD Phototransistor
The SparkFun TEMT6000 Breakout is a compact ambient light sensor module featuring a silicon NPN phototransistor sensitive to the visible spectrum (390–700 nm). It provides an analog voltage output proportional to light intensity, making it ideal for backlight dimming and light-sensing applications with 3.3V or 5V microcontroller systems like Arduino and Raspberry Pi.
Features
- Silicon NPN phototransistor with human-eye-like spectral response (390–700 nm)
- Analog voltage output increases linearly with incident light intensity
- Wide ±60° half-sensitivity viewing angle for broad-area light detection
- Compact SMD package on breakout board for easy PCB integration
- 3.3V to 5V operating range compatible with most development platforms

The TEMT6000 Ambient Light Sensor Breakout provides a straightforward interface to a silicon NPN epitaxial planar phototransistor housed in a miniature transparent mold. The sensor’s spectral sensitivity is tuned to match the human eye’s response, making it particularly effective for applications where perceived ambient light levels need to be measured, such as automatic display brightness adjustment.
The device operates on a simple phototransistor principle: incident light generates a base current, which is amplified to produce a collector-emitter current. This current is converted to an analog voltage signal via an on-board resistor, providing a direct, linear representation of ambient light intensity. The breakout board includes all necessary support components, presenting a clean analog signal pin for direct connection to a microcontroller’s ADC input.
