Description

The SparkFun ACS723 Current Sensor Breakout is engineered around the Allegro MicroSystems ACS723 Hall effect current sensor IC. This design provides a voltage output linearly proportional to the current flowing through the onboard current-carrying path (IP+ and IP- pins). The Hall effect principle ensures complete galvanic isolation, allowing you to safely monitor high-side or low-side currents in circuits operating at different voltage levels than your microcontroller.

The module includes a configurable low-pass filter on its output. By default, the bandwidth is set to 20kHz to minimize noise at higher gain settings, optimizing for typical embedded applications. For full-frequency response, the onboard JP1 Jumper can be closed to enable the sensor’s native 80kHz bandwidth. This breakout is ideal for power monitoring, inrush current detection, and overload protection in DIY electronics and prototypes.

Key Features

  • High-Isolation Hall Effect Sensor: Safely measures currents in circuits independent of the logic ground, protecting sensitive microcontroller inputs.
  • Wide Current Range: Accurately senses currents from a low 10mA up to a continuous 5A, suitable for a broad spectrum of applications.
  • Configurable Signal Bandwidth: User-selectable filter (20kHz/80kHz) allows optimization for noise reduction or high-speed current tracking.
  • Linear Analog Output: Provides a straightforward voltage signal (400mV/A) for easy reading with any microcontroller ADC.
  • Single 5V Supply Operation: Simplifies power rail design and integrates seamlessly with 5V Arduino and other common platforms.
  • Compact and Breadboard-Friendly: The small-form-factor breakout board includes all necessary support components for immediate use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage for this ACS723 breakout board?

The SparkFun ACS723 Current Sensor Breakout requires a single 5V DC power supply. This voltage powers the sensor IC and its internal circuitry. The measured current path (IP+ to IP-) is electrically isolated and can be at a completely different voltage potential.

How do I interpret the analog output voltage from this sensor?

The sensor provides a linear analog voltage output with a base sensitivity of 400mV per Ampere (400mV/A). For example, a 1A current will produce a 400mV change from the sensor's quiescent output voltage. This output can be read directly by a microcontroller's analog-to-digital converter (ADC) pin.

What is the purpose of the JP1 Jumper on the board?

The JP1 Jumper selects the output signal bandwidth. By default, it is open, setting a 20kHz low-pass filter to reduce high-frequency noise. Closing the Jumper removes this filter, enabling the sensor's full 80kHz bandwidth for applications requiring faster current transient measurement.

Can this sensor measure both AC and DC currents?

Yes, the ACS723 Hall effect sensor is capable of measuring both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC). The analog output will be a DC voltage biased around Vcc/2, with AC current causing this voltage to oscillate proportionally around that bias point.
