Description

The HS-S59-L operates on the principle of infrared beam interruption. An infrared LED on one side of the slot emits a continuous beam, which is received by a matched NPN phototransistor on the opposite side. When an opaque object passes through the 5.9mm slot, it breaks the beam, causing the phototransistor to switch and trigger a TTL-compatible low-level logic signal at the output pin.

This sensor module incorporates a Schmitt trigger circuit, which provides hysteresis to the output signal. This design effectively debounces and shapes the pulse, eliminating noise and ensuring a clean, stable digital signal suitable for precise timing, speed calculation, and encoder pulse counting applications in various electronic and automation projects.

Key Features

  • Precision Slot Detection: 5.9mm wide slot ensures accurate detection of small objects, wires, or encoder wheel spokes.
  • Stable Digital Output: TTL-level output with integrated Schmitt trigger provides debounced, noise-immune signals for reliable microcontroller input.
  • Broad Voltage Compatibility: Supports operation from 3.3V to 5V DC, making it versatile for use with 3.3V logic microcontrollers and standard 5V Arduino boards.
  • Compact & Ready-to-Use Module: Pre-assembled module with a standard PH2.0 connector simplifies wiring and integration into prototypes and finished projects.
  • Fast Response Time: High-speed infrared phototransistor pair enables detection of rapid object movement for speed and frequency measurement.
  • Durable Construction: PCB-mounted components in a compact form factor offer a high-value build for educational, hobbyist, and light industrial use.

Applications

  • Rotary encoder pulse generation and motor speed measurement in robotics and CNC projects.
  • Object counting and presence detection on conveyor belts or in automated sorting systems.
  • Paper or media detection in printers, plotters, and other office automation equipment.
  • Non-contact limit switching and position sensing in DIY automation and model making.
  • Educational projects demonstrating digital sensing, interrupt-based timing, and photoelectric principles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the output signal type of the HS-S59-L sensor?

The HS-S59-L provides a digital TTL-compatible low-level output signal. When an opaque object passes through the slot and interrupts the infrared beam, the output pin switches to a logic low (0V). When the beam is unbroken, the output remains at a logic high level (approximately VCC). The integrated Schmitt trigger ensures this output is clean and debounced.

What is the operating voltage range, and how do I connect it to an Arduino?

This sensor operates from 3.3V to 5V DC. To connect to an Arduino: connect the module's VCC pin to Arduino's 5V (or 3.3V) pin, GND to GND, and the OUT pin to any digital input pin on the Arduino. You can then read the sensor's state using `digitalRead()`. No external pull-up resistor is required as the module provides a clean digital signal.

What can the 5.9mm slot width detect, and what are typical applications?

The 5.9mm slot is designed to detect thin objects like encoder wheel spokes, paper edges, wires, or small mechanical parts. Typical applications include building rotary encoders for motor speed feedback, counting objects on a production line, detecting media in printers, and creating non-contact limit switches for robotics and automation projects where precise timing or counting is needed.
