The GY-6180 module is built around the VL6180X, a sophisticated proximity and ambient light sensor from STMicroelectronics. It employs a time-of-flight (ToF) measurement principle, where an integrated infrared emitter and receiver calculate distance based on the time taken for reflected light to return, enabling accurate short-range sensing independent of target reflectivity and ambient light.
The module features an on-board voltage regulator to supply the sensor’s required 2.8V core voltage and includes I2C logic level shifters, making it directly compatible with both 3.3V and 5V logic microcontrollers. The two programmable GPIO pins offer flexibility for hardware standby control or interrupt-driven operation, optimizing power consumption and system responsiveness in embedded designs.
