Description

The Crowtail Light Sensor 2.0 module utilizes a cadmium sulfide (CdS) photoresistor (GL5516) as its sensing element. The resistance of the GL5516 decreases non-linearly with increasing incident light intensity. This variable resistance is converted into a stable, buffered analog voltage signal by the onboard LMV358 operational amplifier, which is configured as a unity-gain voltage follower. This configuration provides a high input impedance to the sensor and a low output impedance to the microcontroller’s analog-to-digital converter (ADC), preventing loading effects and ensuring measurement accuracy.

Designed for seamless integration into prototyping environments, the module outputs a 0-Vcc analog voltage corresponding to the light level, making it straightforward to read with a single ADC pin. Its operating voltage range covers both 3.3V and 5V systems, offering broad compatibility with development platforms. The module is supplied with a standard Crowtail 4-pin cable for quick connection to compatible interface boards, streamlining the setup process for light-dependent control systems, data logging, and smart device applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the Crowtail Light Sensor 2.0?

The module is designed to operate from a 3.3V or 5V DC power supply. You must connect it to a compatible voltage source on your microcontroller or development board. The analog output signal will scale proportionally with this supply voltage.

How do I interface this sensor with an Arduino?

Connect the module's VCC and GND pins to the Arduino's 5V and GND. Connect the module's analog output (SIG) pin to one of the Arduino's analog input pins (e.g., A0). Use the `analogRead()` function in your sketch to read the voltage value, which will correspond to the ambient light level.

What does the LMV358 chip do on this module?

The LMV358 operational amplifier is configured as a voltage follower (buffer). It takes the variable voltage from the GL5516 photoresistor and provides a stable, low-impedance output. This prevents the microcontroller's ADC from loading the sensitive sensor circuit, ensuring more accurate and consistent analog readings.

Can this sensor measure specific lux values?

This module provides a relative analog voltage output that correlates with light intensity. It is not factory-calibrated to provide direct lux readings. To estimate lux, you would need to perform a calibration against a known light source using a reference lux meter and map the analog readings to a calibration curve in your code.

Is the included Crowtail cable necessary for operation?

The included 4-pin Crowtail cable provides a convenient plug-and-play connection to Crowtail base shields or compatible boards. For direct wiring, you can solder to the module's pins, but the cable simplifies prototyping and reduces connection errors.
