Description

The SEN0395 millimeter-wave radar sensor utilizes a Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) and Continuous Wave (CW) modulation scheme with separate transmit and receive antennas. This architecture allows it to precisely detect not only moving persons but also micro-movements and completely stationary human presence by analyzing phase shifts in the reflected 24GHz signal. The onboard MMIC and processor apply advanced signal processing algorithms to filter out environmental noise and provide reliable target information.

Designed for seamless integration into smart systems, the module operates from a 3.6V to 5V DC supply, drawing approximately 90mA. Its compact form factor and wide operating temperature range make it suitable for embedding in security systems, smart lighting, HVAC control, and occupancy monitoring applications where optical or PIR sensors are unreliable.

Key Features

  • 24GHz millimeter-wave radar technology with FMCW and CW multi-mode modulation for precise presence sensing.
  • Detects a full range of human activity: moving, micro-moving (e.g., breathing), and completely stationary presence.
  • High immunity to environmental interference from light, dust, snow, haze, noise, and temperature fluctuations.
  • Dual output options: configurable digital I/O switch and full UART serial interface for detailed data reporting.
  • Wide 100° (horizontal) by 40° (vertical) detection beam angle for broad area coverage.
  • Extended operating temperature range from -40°C to +85°C for reliable performance in harsh environments.
  • Compact and low-profile 24mm x 28mm module design for easy embedding into end products.
  • Optimized performance-to-cost ratio for high-volume smart building and IoT applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between this mmWave sensor and a standard PIR motion sensor?

Unlike PIR sensors that detect moving heat sources, this 24GHz mmWave radar uses FMCW/CW modulation to detect phase shifts in reflected radio waves. This allows it to sense micro-movements (like breathing) and completely stationary human presence, providing reliable detection even when a person is sitting still or sleeping. It is also largely unaffected by environmental factors like temperature gradients or ambient light.

How do I interface with the SEN0395 sensor? What are the output options?

The module provides two primary output methods. First, a UART serial interface (default 115200 bps) outputs detailed JSON or string-formatted data packets containing target status, distance, and energy values. Second, a configurable GPIO pin can be set as a simple digital switch output (high/low) based on presence detection thresholds, useful for directly triggering relays or alarms without a microcontroller.

What is the power requirement and typical current consumption?

The sensor operates from a 3.6V to 5V DC power supply. Under typical operating conditions, it draws approximately 90mA. Ensure your power source can provide stable voltage within this range, especially when powering additional circuitry from the same supply, to maintain sensor accuracy and communication stability.

Can the detection range or sensitivity be adjusted?

Yes, parameters like detection range thresholds, sensitivity, and hold time can be configured via serial commands sent to the module. This allows you to fine-tune the sensor for specific application scenarios, such as reducing false triggers in cluttered environments or setting a minimum detection distance to ignore nearby objects.

Is this sensor suitable for outdoor use?

The module has a robust operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C and is immune to interference from rain, snow, haze, dust, and light. However, the PCB itself is not conformally coated or housed in an IP-rated enclosure. For permanent outdoor installation, the module must be placed inside a suitable protective housing that is transparent to 24GHz radio waves, such as an ABS or polycarbonate enclosure.
