Description

The TEC1-12706 thermoelectric module utilizes the Peltier effect to create a controlled temperature differential. When DC power is applied, heat is actively pumped from one ceramic face to the other, establishing distinct hot and cold sides. This solid-state operation provides precise thermal management without moving parts, noise, or vibration.

Constructed with 127 bismuth telluride semiconductor couples sandwiched between alumina ceramic plates, the module offers reliable performance for extended duty cycles. Critical to operation is the mandatory use of an external heatsink on the hot side to dissipate waste heat and prevent thermal runaway. The module’s 1.98-ohm internal resistance and 12V nominal operating voltage make it compatible with standard DC power supplies and motor driver circuits.

Key Features

  • High-density 127-couple thermoelectric array for effective heat pumping.
  • Alumina ceramic plates ensure electrical insulation and efficient thermal conductivity.
  • Extended operational lifespan rated for over 200,000 hours of continuous use.
  • Reversible DC polarity enables instant switching between cooling and heating functions.
  • Compact 40mm x 40mm footprint facilitates integration into constrained spaces.
  • Robust construction supports a maximum hot-side temperature of 138°C.
  • Pre-attached 200mm insulated wire leads simplify electrical connections.
  • Solid-state design guarantees maintenance-free, silent operation.

Applications

  • Precision temperature control for CCD image sensors and laser diodes.
  • Active cooling for high-performance computing CPUs and GPU modules.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the absolute maximum voltage and current for the TEC1-12706?

Do not exceed the maximum voltage (Umax) of 15.4V DC or the maximum current (Imax) of 6A. Continuous operation beyond these limits will cause permanent damage to the semiconductor couples. For reliable long-term performance, operate at or near the nominal 12V specification.

Is a heatsink required for operation?

Yes, a heatsink is mandatory. The hot side of the module must be attached to a suitably sized heatsink with thermal paste before applying power. Operating without a heatsink, even for a few seconds, will cause rapid overheating and likely destroy the module due to its inability to dissipate waste heat.

How do I reverse the heating and cooling sides?

The hot and cold sides are reversed simply by swapping the polarity of the applied DC power. Connect the positive supply to the opposite lead to switch the direction of heat pumping. This allows the same module to be used for either active cooling or heating applications.

What are the wiring and connection requirements?

Use the included 200mm insulated wire leads. Due to the high current (up to 6A), ensure all connections are secure and use appropriately gauged wiring (recommended 18 AWG or thicker) between your power supply and the module to minimize voltage drop and resistive heating.

Can this module be used for power generation?

Yes, the TEC1-12706 can function as a thermoelectric generator (TEG) when a significant temperature differential is applied across its faces, generating a small DC voltage. However, its primary design is optimized for heat pumping, and power generation efficiency is lower than purpose-built TEG modules.
