Description

The Adafruit LTR390 UV Light Sensor breakout provides genuine ultraviolet-A (UVA) spectral measurement, distinguishing it from sensors that approximate UV Index from visible light levels. Its dedicated photodiode offers a peak spectral sensitivity between 300 and 350 nm, making it suitable for applications requiring accurate UVA exposure monitoring. The module also includes a separate ambient light sensor (ALS) channel for measuring visible light in the 500-600 nm range.

All signal conditioning, biasing, and analog-to-digital conversion are handled internally by the LTR390 IC, eliminating the need for external ADCs and simplifying integration. The breakout board features level-shifting circuitry to ensure safe operation with both 3.3V and 5V logic levels, making it directly compatible with a wide range of development platforms from Arduino Uno to Raspberry Pi and Adafruit Feather boards.

Key Features

  • True UVA spectral sensor with dedicated 300-350 nm photodiode.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the LTR390 and sensors that provide a UV Index?

The LTR390 provides true UVA spectral measurement within the 300-350 nm band, using a dedicated photodiode. In contrast, sensors that output a UV Index typically approximate it using algorithms based on visible ambient light levels, not direct UV spectrum sensing.

What is the operating voltage range and logic level compatibility?

The module operates from a 3V to 5V DC supply. It includes onboard level-shifting circuitry, making its I2C data pins safely compatible with both 3.3V and 5V logic microcontrollers like Arduino Uno, Raspberry Pi, and Adafruit Feather boards.

How do I connect this sensor using the STEMMA QT/Qwiic connectors?

Simply use a STEMMA QT or SparkFun Qwiic 4-wire cable (included with many development boards) to connect the sensor's JST SH port to a compatible host. This provides power (3-5V), ground, and the I2C (SDA, SCL) lines for solderless plug-and-play operation.

Can I change the I2C address of the LTR390 sensor?

The LTR390 IC has a fixed I2C address of 0x53. For systems requiring multiple sensors, you will need to use an I2C multiplexer (like the TCA9548A) to manage multiple devices on the same bus.
