Description

The MQ3 sensor utilizes a tin dioxide (SnO2) semiconductor sensing element. In the presence of alcohol vapor, the sensor’s conductivity increases, which is converted into an analog voltage signal. This signal can be read directly by the analog input pin of a microcontroller for concentration estimation.

The module includes a simple drive circuit and a heater to maintain the sensing element at optimal operating temperature. It is designed for stable performance and long life in consumer and educational applications, though it requires periodic calibration for quantitative measurements.

Key Features

  • Semiconductor-based alcohol vapor detection with wide detecting scope.
  • Fast response and recovery time for dynamic monitoring.
  • On-board comparator with adjustable threshold via potentiometer.
  • Gravity-standard 3-pin interface (VCC, GND, Signal) for simplified connection.
  • Stable and long-life sensing element with built-in heater.
  • Compact PCB design with mounting holes for secure installation.
  • Optimized performance-to-cost ratio for educational and prototyping use.

Applications

  • Breathalyzer and alcohol detection prototypes for educational projects.
  • Indoor air quality monitoring for alcohol vapor in labs or workshops.
  • Safety systems for detecting alcohol leaks in fermentation or chemical processes.
  • DIY environmental monitoring stations with Arduino or Raspberry Pi.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage for this MQ3 sensor module?

The module requires a stable 5V DC power supply. This voltage powers both the module's logic and the sensor's internal heater. Applying voltages outside this range may damage the sensor or provide incorrect readings.

How do I connect and read data from this sensor with an Arduino?

Connect the module's VCC to Arduino 5V, GND to GND, and the analog signal pin to an analog input (e.g., A0). The sensor outputs an analog voltage (0-5V) proportional to gas concentration. Use the `analogRead()` function in your Arduino sketch to obtain a value between 0 and 1023.

Does the sensor require any calibration?

Yes, for accurate quantitative measurements, calibration is necessary. The sensor needs a pre-heating period of at least 24 hours for initial stabilization. After that, you should take a reading in clean air as a baseline (R0), and then expose it to a known concentration of alcohol to establish a response curve.

What gases besides alcohol can the MQ3 detect?

The MQ3 is primarily sensitive to alcohol (ethanol) vapor. It also shows some cross-sensitivity to other combustible gases like LPG, propane, and hydrogen, but its sensitivity is highest for alcohol. For specific alcohol detection, software filtering and proper calibration are required to minimize interference.

What is the purpose of the on-board potentiometer?

The blue potentiometer adjusts the threshold for the digital output pin (if your module version has one) or can be used to fine-tune the sensitivity of the analog reading circuit. Turning it clockwise generally increases sensitivity, making the sensor trigger at lower gas concentrations.
