Description

This sensor module employs a reflective photoplethysmography (PPG) principle. The MAX30101 utilizes integrated LEDs and photodetectors to measure light absorption variations in blood vessels, providing raw optical data. The onboard MAX32664 Biometric Sensor Hub, a Cortex-M4 based processor, handles all complex signal processing, including digital filtering, R-wave detection, and pressure compensation, outputting fully processed heart rate and SpO2 values via I2C.

The module is designed for reliable performance in dynamic environments, featuring integrated cover glass for optical stability and robust mechanical protection. Its Qwiic connector simplifies wiring, requiring only connection to power, ground, and I2C lines for rapid integration into wearable fitness monitors, hearables, portable medical devices, and mobile health applications.

Key Features

  • Dual-chip architecture: MAX30101 for optical sensing and MAX32664 for onboard biometric algorithm processing.
  • Provides direct output of calculated heart rate (BPM) and blood oxygen saturation (SpO2 %) with confidence indicators.
  • High signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and advanced filtering for resilience against motion artifacts.
  • Compact, board-level module with integrated cover glass for optimal optical coupling and durability.
  • Qwiic (I2C) interface enables plug-and-play connectivity within the SparkFun ecosystem and beyond.
  • Supported by comprehensive Arduino library for easy configuration and data retrieval.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage for this SparkFun sensor module?

The module is designed for the Qwiic ecosystem, which operates at a standard 3.3V. Ensure your host microcontroller or Qwiic-compatible board provides a 3.3V power supply on the Qwiic bus. The I2C logic levels are also 3.3V.

How do I connect and read data from this sensor?

Connection is simplified via the onboard Qwiic connector. Simply use a Qwiic cable to connect the module's I2C lines (SDA, SCL), 3.3V, and GND to a compatible Qwiic port on your microcontroller (e.g., SparkFun RedBoard, Arduino Uno with Qwiic Shield, Raspberry Pi). Utilize the provided SparkFun Arduino library to initialize the sensor and read processed heart rate and SpO2 data directly.

Does the sensor require calibration or provide raw data?

No user calibration is required. The onboard MAX32664 biometric hub processes the raw optical data from the MAX30101, applying proprietary algorithms for motion compensation and signal conditioning. The module outputs fully calculated values for heart rate (BPM) and SpO2 percentage, along with confidence metrics, not raw photodetector readings.

What is the typical measurement range and accuracy for SpO2 and heart rate?

The MAX30101/MAX32664 system is capable of measuring SpO2 from 0% to 100% and heart rate from low BPM to approximately 250 BPM. Actual accuracy in a final application depends on proper optical coupling, minimal ambient light interference, and system integration. The onboard algorithms are designed to maximize accuracy under typical wearable use conditions.
