Description

The LJ12A3-4-Z/AY operates on the eddy-current induction principle, where an internal oscillator generates a high-frequency electromagnetic field. When a ferrous metal object enters the 4mm sensing zone, it induces eddy currents that dampen the oscillator’s amplitude, triggering the solid-state NPN output switch. This non-contact detection method eliminates mechanical wear and provides a long operational life.

Engineered for harsh industrial environments, its IP65-rated housing ensures reliable performance in the presence of dust, coolants, and non-corrosive liquids. The sensor’s wide supply voltage tolerance and built-in reverse-polarity and short-circuit protection make it suitable for direct connection to programmable logic controllers (PLCs), relays, and microcontroller-based systems without additional signal conditioning.

Key Features

  • Non-contact inductive sensing for wear-free operation and high repeatability.
  • Shielded (flush-mountable) tubular M12 form factor for side-by-side installation without mutual interference.
  • Integrated status LED provides visual confirmation of target detection and power-on state.
  • High switching frequency enables rapid response for high-speed counting and positioning applications.
  • Robust construction with vibration and shock resistance for demanding machine tool and automation environments.
  • Optimized performance-to-cost ratio for reliable metal detection in cost-sensitive automation projects.

Applications

  • Precision end-of-travel and position sensing in CNC machines and automated milling equipment.
  • Metal part presence verification and counting on high-speed conveyor lines and assembly stations.
  • Tool position monitoring and tool break detection in lathes and machining centers.
  • Safety interlock and door position sensing on industrial cabinets and robotic workcells.
  • Limit switch replacement for cylinder position feedback in pneumatic and hydraulic systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between NPN Normally Open (NO) and Normally Closed (NC) output on this sensor?

The LJ12A3-4-Z/AY features an NPN Normally Open (NO) output. In its idle state (no target detected), the output transistor is off (open circuit). When a metal target enters the 4mm sensing zone, the transistor switches on, sinking current to ground (0V). This is the most common configuration for activating PLC digital inputs. A Normally Closed (NC) version would have the opposite logic, conducting in the idle state.

Can this sensor detect non-ferrous metals like aluminum or copper?

No. Standard inductive proximity sensors like the LJ12A3 series are specifically tuned for ferrous metals (iron and steel). The sensing distance for non-ferrous metals like aluminum, brass, or copper is significantly reduced, often to 30-50% of the rated 4mm distance, and detection may be unreliable. For non-ferrous detection, a capacitive or specialized 'all-metal' inductive sensor is required.

How do I wire this NPN sensor to a microcontroller like an Arduino?

Connect the brown wire to your DC power supply positive (6-36V), the blue wire to ground (0V). The black wire is the switched NPN output. To interface with a microcontroller input pin, connect a pull-up resistor (e.g., 10kΩ) from the Arduino's input pin to 5V. Connect the sensor's black output wire to the same input pin. When the sensor detects a target, it will pull the input pin low to ground through the internal transistor.

What does 'shielded' or 'flush mountable' mean for installation?

A 'shielded' (or flush-mountable) sensor, like this LJ12A3 model, has its sensing face surrounded by a metal ring. This allows it to be installed flush with or embedded into a metal mounting bracket without the bracket itself triggering a false detection. An 'unshielded' sensor requires a clearance zone around its sides. For precise positioning in metal fixtures, the shielded design is essential.

Is the 1.2m cable length fixed, or can it be extended?

The cable is a fixed, integral part of the sensor housing and is not designed to be removed or field-replaced. The cable length can be extended by splicing and soldering, but it is critical to maintain proper shielding, use a cable with similar specifications, and seal the connection thoroughly to preserve the IP65 environmental rating. For best reliability, use a sensor with the pre-attached cable length required for your application.
