Description

The MQ-7 sensor module utilizes a tin dioxide (SnO2) semiconductor sensing element whose conductivity changes in the presence of carbon monoxide gas. This change is conditioned by the onboard circuitry to provide a corresponding analog voltage output, where higher concentrations yield higher voltages. A comparator circuit provides a digital output, with its trigger threshold adjustable via an onboard potentiometer.

The sensor requires a 5V supply for both the heater circuit and the module logic. The heater operates in a high/low voltage cycle (5V and 1.5V) to optimize sensitivity and sensor longevity. The module is designed for reliable stability and rapid response/recovery times, making it suitable for continuous monitoring applications in well-ventilated areas.

Key Features

  • Semiconductor gas sensing technology for carbon monoxide (CO) detection.
  • Provides both analog (0-5V) and adjustable digital output signals.
  • Onboard comparator with threshold adjustment potentiometer for digital triggering.
  • Low power heater consumption (~350 mW) with a 5V operating voltage.
  • Compact PCB design with four mounting holes for secure mechanical installation.
  • Stable performance across a wide humidity range (up to 95% RH).
  • Rapid response and recovery characteristics for dynamic gas concentration monitoring.

Applications

  • Residential and commercial carbon monoxide leak detection and alarm systems.
  • Air quality monitoring in garages, workshops, and near combustion appliances.
  • Portable safety devices for HVAC technicians and industrial maintenance personnel.
  • Educational projects and prototypes for environmental sensing with Arduino or Raspberry Pi.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage and current requirement for the MQ-7 module?

The module requires a stable 5V DC supply for both logic and the internal heater circuit. The heater draws up to 180 mA during its high-voltage phase, with a total power consumption of approximately 350 mW. Ensure your power source can provide this current.

How do I interface the MQ-7 sensor with an Arduino?

Connect the module's VCC and GND to Arduino's 5V and GND pins. The analog output (AO) pin connects to an Arduino analog input (e.g., A0) to read gas concentration. The digital output (DO) can connect to a digital pin to trigger an interrupt or alarm when a set threshold is exceeded.

Can the digital output threshold be adjusted?

Yes, the module includes a blue potentiometer to adjust the sensitivity threshold for the digital output pin. Turning the potentiometer changes the comparator reference voltage, allowing you to set the specific gas concentration level at which the digital pin switches from high to low.

What is the sensor's response and recovery time?

The MQ-7 sensor features rapid response characteristics, typically reacting to gas presence within seconds. The recovery time to return to baseline after gas removal is within 30 seconds under standard test conditions, allowing for dynamic monitoring.

Is pre-heating required before use?

Yes, like most metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors, the MQ-7 requires an initial pre-heating period. It is recommended to power the module for 24-48 hours before taking accurate measurements to stabilize the sensing element and ensure consistent readings.
