Frequently Asked Questions

What microcontroller powers the SparkFun Qwiic Pro Micro?

It features the ATmega32U4, an 8-bit AVR microcontroller. This MCU provides native USB capabilities, eliminating the need for an external USB-to-serial converter, which simplifies programming and allows the board to function as various USB devices like a keyboard, mouse, or serial port.

What is the purpose of the Qwiic connector on this board?

The Qwiic connector provides a solderless, polarization-keyed I2C interface, simplifying connection to a wide range of Qwiic-enabled sensors and peripherals. This allows for rapid prototyping and integration of external modules without the need for soldering or complex wiring, enhancing project development efficiency.

How is the SparkFun Qwiic Pro Micro programmed?

It is programmed via its on-board USB-C connector using the Arduino IDE or other AVR development tools. The ATmega32U4's native USB support allows it to enumerate as a virtual serial port, making code upload straightforward. Ensure you select the correct board definition (e.g., SparkFun Pro Micro) in your IDE.

Can the board accept external power?

Yes, the board includes an on-board voltage regulator, allowing it to accept unregulated DC input up to 6VDC through its "RAW" pin. For regulated 5V power, connect directly to the "VCC" pin. Always ensure the polarity is correct to prevent damage to the board.
