Description

The MQ-5 sensor utilizes a tin dioxide (SnO2) semiconductor sensing element. In clean air, the conductivity of SnO2 is low. When exposed to combustible gases, the conductivity increases proportionally with gas concentration. The module includes a basic conditioning circuit that converts this change in conductivity into an analog output voltage signal, which can be read by an ADC pin on a microcontroller.

Designed for reliability in consumer and industrial gas leak detection applications, the module features fast response and recovery times. It is optimized to minimize interference from common household vapors like alcohol and cooking fumes. The operating environment should maintain a relative humidity below 95% for stable performance.

Key Features

  • High sensitivity to LPG, LNG, natural gas (methane), propane, and iso-butane.
  • Analog output voltage increases linearly with the concentration of the target gas.
  • On-board sensitivity adjustment via a precision potentiometer for calibration.
  • Integrated power and signal output status indicator LED for operational feedback.
  • Fast response time and stable recovery characteristics for continuous monitoring.
  • Compact and durable PCB construction with gold-plated sensing electrodes.
  • Low power consumption suitable for battery-powered or embedded systems.
  • High-value build providing reliable detection at an optimized performance-to-cost ratio.

Applications

  • Residential and commercial LPG/natural gas leak detection alarms.
  • Industrial safety monitoring for methane and propane in confined spaces.
  • Portable gas detectors for HVAC technicians and utility workers.
  • Educational kits for environmental sensing and IoT air quality projects.
  • Embedded systems for smart home safety and automation controllers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the MQ-5 module?

The MQ-5 module operates from 2.5V to 5.0V DC. This wide range makes it compatible with both 3.3V logic systems (like ESP32 or Raspberry Pi) and standard 5V Arduino boards without requiring a logic level shifter.

How do I interface the MQ-5 sensor with an Arduino?

Connect the module's VCC and GND to your Arduino's 5V and GND pins. The analog output pin (AO) connects to any Arduino analog input pin (e.g., A0). You can then read the voltage value with analogRead() and map it to an estimated gas concentration, using the on-board potentiometer to calibrate sensitivity.

What gases does the MQ-5 sensor detect?

The MQ-5 is primarily sensitive to combustible gases including Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), natural gas (methane), propane, iso-butane, and coal gas. It is designed to have reduced sensitivity to alcohol and cooking fumes to minimize false alarms in household applications.

Does the module require a pre-heating time?

Yes, like most metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors, the MQ-5 requires an initial pre-heating period after power-on for the sensing element to stabilize. Allow approximately 24 hours for the first-time use or after a long storage period, and 2-3 minutes for subsequent warm-ups for accurate readings.

How do I calibrate the sensor's sensitivity?

Sensitivity is adjusted via the blue potentiometer on the module. Rotating it changes the threshold for the analog output. For basic digital alarm applications, you can also use the digital output pin (DO), which goes high/low based on a concentration threshold set by this same potentiometer.
