Waveshare MQ-3 Alcohol Gas Sensor Module - Analog & Digital Output
The Waveshare MQ-3 is a semiconductor-based alcohol (ethanol) gas sensor module featuring both analog and digital outputs for direct interfacing with microcontrollers like Arduino and Raspberry Pi. Operating from 2.5V to 5V, it provides a proportional voltage signal for concentration measurement and a digital trigger for threshold alarms.
Features
- Semiconductor sensor (SnO2) specifically sensitive to alcohol and ethanol vapors.
- Dual analog (A0) and digital (D0) outputs for flexible system integration.
- Wide operating voltage range from 2.5V to 5.0V DC for compatibility with 3.3V and 5V logic systems.
- On-board potentiometer for adjustable digital output threshold sensitivity.
- Compact PCB design (40 x 21 mm) with 2.54mm pitch goldpin connectors and 2mm mounting holes.

The MQ-3 module utilizes a tin dioxide (SnO2) semiconductor sensing element. In clean air, the conductivity of SnO2 is low. When alcohol vapor is present, the sensor’s conductivity increases proportionally with the gas concentration, which is measured as a change in voltage at the analog output pin. This principle allows for both qualitative detection and semi-quantitative measurement of alcohol levels.
The module includes onboard signal conditioning and a comparator circuit. The analog output (A0) provides a continuous voltage signal for precise ADC measurement, while the digital output (D0) toggles low when the sensed concentration exceeds a user-defined threshold set via the onboard potentiometer. This dual-output design makes it suitable for both data-logging applications and simple alarm systems.
