Description

The Waveshare BME688 module integrates the Bosch Sensortec BME688, a state-of-the-art digital environmental sensor. It combines high-linearity and high-accuracy pressure, humidity, and temperature sensing with a sophisticated gas sensor capable of detecting a wide range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), and other gases for indoor air quality (IAQ) monitoring. The sensor’s integrated AI studio enables the development of custom gas pattern recognition models.

Communication is highly flexible, supporting both I2C (with a configurable address for bus cascading) and SPI interfaces, selectable via a Jumper or the CS pin. The onboard voltage level translator ensures seamless operation in both 3.3V and 5V microcontroller ecosystems, such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32, and STM32 platforms. The module is designed for low-power operation, making it suitable for battery-powered wearable devices and smart home sensors.

Key Features

  • Bosch BME688 4-in-1 MEMS environmental sensor with integrated MOX gas sensor.
  • Precise measurement: Temperature (±0.5°C), Humidity (±3% r.H.), Pressure (±1 hPa).
  • Advanced gas sensing with Bosch AI capabilities for pattern learning and classification.
  • Dual digital interface (I2C up to 3.4 MHz, SPI up to 10 MHz) with easy mode selection.
  • Broad power supply compatibility (1.71V to 3.6V) with onboard 5V-to-3.3V level shifting.
  • Ultra-low power consumption for always-on applications in portable devices.
  • Comprehensive development resources including examples for Raspberry Pi, Arduino, and ESP32.
  • Compact PCB design with standard 0.1" pin headers for easy prototyping.

Applications

  • Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) monitoring and smart HVAC control systems.
  • Portable environmental data loggers and wearable wellness devices.
  • Weather stations and microclimate monitoring for precision agriculture.
  • Smart home automation for comfort and safety (e.g., leak detection, occupancy sensing).
  • IoT edge devices for predictive maintenance in confined spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between I2C and SPI communication on this module, and how do I select between them?

The module supports both I2C and SPI digital interfaces. By default, it is configured for I2C communication. To switch to SPI mode, you must physically connect the CS (Chip Select) pin on the header to a GPIO on your host controller. The I2C address is configurable via solder jumpers, allowing multiple sensors on the same bus. SPI offers higher data rates, while I2C is simpler for daisy-chaining multiple devices.

What does the 'AI function' refer to on the BME688 sensor?

The AI function refers to Bosch Sensortec's integrated AI capabilities and the associated BME AI-Studio software. The gas sensor within the BME688 can be trained to recognize specific gas patterns or environmental scenarios. Developers can use the AI-Studio to create machine learning models that run directly on a connected host MCU, enabling applications like specific VOC detection, food freshness monitoring, or early fire detection without complex external analysis.

Is this module compatible with both 5V Arduino boards and 3.3V Raspberry Pi/ESP32 boards?

Yes, the module is fully compatible with both 5V and 3.3V logic systems. It features an onboard voltage level translator circuit. The sensor core itself operates from 1.71V to 3.6V, but the level shifter ensures the I2C/SPI signal lines are safely translated, allowing you to connect the module directly to either a 5V Arduino Uno or a 3.3V Raspberry Pi/ESP32 without risk of damage or need for additional logic converters.

What type of gases can the BME688 detect, and how is the output presented?

The BME688's metal-oxide (MOX) gas sensor detects a broad range of reducing gases, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), carbon monoxide, and hydrogen. It does not output a concentration for a specific gas. Instead, it provides a gas resistance value and an IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) index. For specific gas identification, Bosch's AI-Studio must be used to train a model based on the sensor's response patterns to a target gas or environmental condition.
