SparkFun VL53L5CX Qwiic ToF Imager - 8x8 Multi-Zone Distance Sensor Module
The SparkFun VL53L5CX Qwiic ToF Imager is a multi-zone distance sensor module delivering a real-time 8×8 grid of depth measurements up to 4 meters. Featuring a solderless Qwiic I2C interface and breadboard-compatible headers, it is designed for seamless integration with microcontrollers like ESP32, RP2040, and SparkFun Artemis for robotics, gesture control, and 3D mapping applications.
Features
- VL53L5CX Time-of-Flight sensor with 8×8 (64-zone) or 4×4 resolution.
- Accurate distance sensing up to 4000 mm with a wide 63° diagonal FoV.
- Onboard Qwiic connector for solderless I2C (Qwiic) connectivity.
- Advanced histogram processing minimizes cover glass crosstalk for reliable readings.
- Supports multi-target detection and requires a high-memory MCU for firmware loading.

The SparkFun Qwiic ToF Imager integrates the STMicroelectronics VL53L5CX sensor, a state-of-the-art multi-zone Time-of-Flight (ToF) device. It operates on the direct Time-of-Flight principle, emitting modulated infrared light and measuring the phase shift of the reflected signal to calculate distance for each of its 64 independent zones. This provides a detailed depth map instead of a single-point measurement.
The module includes signal conditioning and histogram-based processing onboard, which enhances measurement stability and reduces interference from sensor cover glass. Its wide 63° diagonal field of view enables broad-area monitoring. Designed for modern embedded systems, it requires a microcontroller with sufficient RAM (like ESP32 or RP2040) to load the sensor’s firmware during initialization via the I2C bus.
