Description

The Grove Tilt Switch v1.1 is a digital input module that functions as a tilt-activated switch. Inside its housing, a pair of conductive balls make contact with internal pins when the module is tilted into the upright position, closing the circuit and pulling the SIG output pin HIGH. When level or inverted, the circuit opens, and the output defaults LOW. This straightforward electromechanical principle provides a reliable digital signal for orientation detection.

Designed for seamless integration, the module features the standard 4-pin Grove connector, eliminating the need for complex wiring. A surface-mount resistor is integrated on-board. It is engineered for durability with a specified mechanical life of 100,000 cycles, making it suitable for prototypes, educational kits, and simple monitoring applications where robust, low-power tilt sensing is required.

Key Features

  • Digital Tilt Detection: Provides a clean digital signal (HIGH/LOW) based on module orientation, simplifying microcontroller input.
  • Dual Voltage Operation: Supports both 3.3V and 5V logic levels for broad compatibility with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and other development boards.
  • Grove System Interface: Utilizes the 4-pin Grove connector for quick, solderless connection to a wide range of Grove base shields and platforms.
  • Precise Angular Thresholds: Features defined connecting (10° to 170°) and disconnect (190° to 350°) angles for predictable switching behavior.
  • High Durability: Constructed for a long operational life, rated for over 100,000 mechanical actuation cycles.
  • Compact Form Factor: Small, lightweight design enables easy integration into space-constrained projects and enclosures.

Applications

  • Simple orientation detection for robotics and DIY projects.
  • Tilt-activated triggers for interactive art installations and toys.
  • Position monitoring for basic security alarms (e.g., tamper detection).
  • Educational tool for teaching digital input and switch interfacing.
  • Leveling indicator for hobbyist CNC or 3D printer beds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the output signal of the Grove Tilt Switch?

The module provides a simple digital output. The SIG pin outputs LOW when the switch is level or inverted. When tilted into its upright position (within the 10° to 170° connecting angle), the internal balls make contact and the SIG pin output becomes HIGH.

What microcontrollers is this tilt switch compatible with?

It is compatible with any microcontroller or development board that can read a digital input and provides a 3.3V or 5V power supply. This includes popular platforms like Arduino (Uno, Mega, Nano), Raspberry Pi (using a logic level shifter for 3.3V GPIO), ESP32, and STM32 boards. The Grove connector simplifies connection to Seeed Studio Studio base shields.

How do the connecting and disconnect angles work?

The connecting angle (10° to 170°) is the range of tilt where the internal switch closes, outputting HIGH. The disconnect angle (190° to 350°) is the range where the switch opens, outputting LOW. There is a small hysteresis zone between 170° and 190° to prevent signal chatter during movement near the threshold.

Can this sensor measure the degree of tilt?

No, this is a digital switch, not an analog inclinometer. It only indicates whether the module is tilted beyond its specific threshold angle (into the 'upright' state). For measuring precise angles, a dedicated analog tilt sensor or accelerometer/IMU module is required.
